Fuel Fouled?

OK, so I've been fighting the leaky valve covers. I ran the truck for a bit this morning with 4 spark plug wires off (the passenger side). It actually ran, I just thought it was cold :-)

Now, it's running rough, particularly at low rpms.

I did tighten all the rocke radjusters about a quarter turn more. They are finally quiet. I can still spin most of the pushrods by finger, so I don't think they are too tight.

So, do you think I could have fouled the passenger side plugs? Would that make it run rough at lower revs. It seems to be running pretty strong in the middle of the power band now.

Loose valves will not foul the plugs. How rough does it run? A vacuum guage can tell you a lot.

what he said :-)

My symptom- rough idle and a stumble coming off idle:

the vacuum follows the problem. Meaning, it's low when it's idling rough. Vauum is good when I get passed the stumble. More initial advance also helps. But, it's getting up past 20 BTDC.

Possible causes:

1. fouled from running with some plugs not firing.

2. small valve adjustement (I hope this ain't it, cause I just got it quiet.)

I did the same thing twice in one day with no ill effects just recently. It is amazing how well it runs missing half of the cylinders. Run a can of carb cleaner through it and it should clean it up.

Why not just pull a plug and take a look?

I pulled, cleaned the plug on the passenger side. Put in a new rotor on the dizzy. I've got a new cap, but it's got HEI terminals instead of what fits my wires :-(

Anyway, that didn't help.

I talked with a long timemechanic neighboor, a long time Ford guy. He said I probably went to far on the rocker adjustment. It makes sense with the fluctuating vacuum. I'll let it cool down and go back in.

he said that these setups will tick. It's better to be loose than tight. He typically goes about 1/4 turn only past when the pushrods stop spinning freely.

He also said to use the cork gaskets with no sealer on teh valve covers. ...go figure.

This guy has a 69 f100 with a 390 he's had for many years. he also has an 03 Cobra, a ranger a Crown Vic and an 04 F150. he traded a Lighning for the Cobra. He's definitely a Ford man.

Well ..from what I can remember about the set for the 521..what is it...010 to .020 after the pushrod touches the lifter? sound right? I going by memory?

But it would seem to me ..that if you were to tight..you would hear a popping sound coming out of the pass side...you must have left the plug wires off for a reason?

Thinking if there off? it will remind you to do something else? What I dont know?

Edit...Set your dail indacator on top of your rockers..paralell with the pushrod and set them that way...

As soon as you feel the slightest drag on the pushrods..put on you indicator
with the arm on the indicator on the same plane as the pushrod..

And then zero out the dail..run the adjuster down to the what it to be for preload on the lifter..do that on all 16 and you should be set!

Greg, I turned the adj. screw until the pushrod did not move verticly anymore. Then turned it another 3/4 turn. This was what Edelbrock told me to do. once I got them adjusted I haven't had to go back in since.

Guys, I backed off the valvaes a little. It seemed to help just a little. But it is still running rough at idle. and stumble up until about 2000rpm.

I'll probably replace the plugs, cap and wires when I work on it next.

It wasn't running bad before the recent valve adjustemnet and the valve cover fiasco. But, the valves should eb back to where they were before...I'm stumped.

Grehg, Did you back them off all the way and start over? You really should, if you didn't. watch out for bleed down lifters. they collapse easily and can mess you up if you aren't careful.

No, I have not started from ground zero again. Maybe I should try that next time. I'm so tired of pulling these vave covers..I'm going to design a set of quick release mechansims for these covers :-)

I know exactly what I would see......a whole mess of oil in the valve covers. I think that's what HR saw when they did their 390.
