94 F-350. I'm getting a pretty good clunking under my left foot when I go over bumps and I'm guessing it's the spring bushing worn out. The truck has over 170k on it and I'm not sure when or if they'ver ever been changed. Is this something that can be done in the garage and if so, how difficult is it to do?
Changing out the spring eye bushings in place takes a couple of jacks and jackstands. Just unbolt one at a time. Support the front of the truck by the frame with jackstands to unload the front springs. Remove a tire, unbolt one spring eye and use the jack to expose it. Put a jackstand in place so that you are not relying on the jack.
The hardest part of the job is breaking the rusty spring eye bolts and pressing the old bushings out of the spring eyes.
I would recommend using poly bushings for replacements. Also plan on replacing the spring eye bolts which are probably severely rusted by now.
I always just use a torch and cut the old bolt off, then burn out the old bushing. You are replacing them anyway so why waist time trying to get the old one out nicely?
