Mustang Conversion

ok i have a 1950 ford f-1. and personally i feel like it steers like a brick. and being just 16, i really dont want to crash it and ruin all the man hours i haveinto it. i would like to know if there is some place i can get directions on how to put in a Mustang front end suspension and steering. maybe also i would like 4 wheel disk braking system.

if u have a way to help me, email me at joesschopshop2004@yahoo.com thanks.

Joe,

That's how you know it an F-1. They all steer like bricks and the F-100s that followed weren't much better. I put a Volare under my 48. I haven't finished it yet, but I hear that the Volare improves the steering and ride considerably. Check out the truck magazines like Classic Truck and Custom classic truck and even some of the rod magazines for articles in installing the MII. The Volare is an easier install...and cheaper if you're interested. Lots of guys on this forum have done both and one guy in particular whose name I won't mention (but you know who you are) did both on the same truck!
Good luck...

Vern

thanks

thanks. But the magazines and a personal friend who we will call phil. said that the front end conversion from the origional mundane f-1 to the newer ford mustang, would be the best bet. i just put in a new engine. 500 big block. and so i dont have a problem with moving like a brick, just steering like one. i really would just like to have a new suspension in the front end. anotehr problem i came along with is that i want to drop it 3 inches. and the suspension currently available stock isnt adequit. thank you anyways for your ideas, i just recently stripped it down to the frame (again after painting) and it is easier than i thought it would be.

thank you anyway

Joe,
Click on the FTE "Forum" option and look at the topics. Your topic was just below one(this AM) called Alternative Suspensions for F1 and F100s or something close to that. It will answer 99 percent of your questions. I installed a Volare in my 55 and it handles, rides and steers fine. This conversion is considered by many to be old technology. It works great, but you have two basic drawbacks in my opinion. The steering box is large and in the way. Motor mount fabrication complexity is increased and header/exhaust manifold clearance is a problem. The basic steering design is very old. One suspension swap that sounds interesting is using an Areostar front clip. I saw a picture of one in FTE. Don't know anything about it. Consider using something with rack and pinion steering.

Well I dont have much to add but I have a 50 also and I did crash mine after the rear slide out from under me. Anyhow I bought my parts from scotts and am pretty happy with at least how they look. Everything is pretty bulky so I think it will hold up just fine. I would go with the mustang conversion because 1) its still ford, and 2) there is a great after market out there for it. By the way being 20 and crashing your first truck isnt too much fun. Good to see that your thinking about fixing the steering problem in the begining.
