Hey Dennis, what is the deal with the brake booster? Will a regular brake booster work.....or does cruise require a different one? I found all the parts to make the switch to cruise except for the booster for $250. That includes the tilt collum, steering wheel, brake pedal, under dash wiring, and the stuff that goes on the intake. Does that seem like a fair price?
Dennis, I bought all the stuff to add cruise control to my truck today. I did not get the booster. I did get the bracket and rod that connect the booster to the fire wall. I would realy apreciate it if you would tell me where a few things mount. There is a thing that looks like a coffee can that has vacume hoses coming off of it. There is also a black box that has sevaral wires coming off of 2 plugs that is probably 4" x 6" that should go under the dash. I know I can probably mount these items where ever is convenient, but I would like the installation to be as "factory" looking as possible. Also on the main harness there is a rubber grommet that appears to have gone through the fire wall. I would like to know exactly where that goes. The parts were pulled off of the truck when I went to get them, so I didn't get to see how they go. I'm pretty sure I got everything. The following is a list of what I got.
Tilting collum with the cruise buttons
the black box for under the dash
the bracket that bolts to the intake that has a chain going to the accelerator rod
wireing harnesses that connect all this together
a big coffe can with vacume lines
the bracket for the booster
the brake pedal
Do you think it would be a good idea to take pictures of every thing before the instalation? I could also take pictures during the instalation and make a tech article if you think anyone could use the information. I paid $200 for all the parts, but everything apears to be complete and in very good condition. Thanks a bunch for all your help
The vacuum can mounts under the driver side inner fender just aft of the rad support.
The hose goes through that 1" hole.
The wiring harness hole on the firewall won't be there on a non-cruise truck.
You have to cut one yourself. I think the hole is 1 1/2" and you will see a dimple right near the other harness.
I should have pic for you>
The amplifier (black box) mounts to the firewall inside to the left of the dash support bracket ,just below the cowl.
I'm not trying to hijack this thread, but there is another question I have that has not been discussed in this or other cruise threads I have read. I found a '79 doner truck with a 460 I plan to pilch the cruise items for my '79. The problem I have is mine is a 4 speed manual, while the doner is a automatic. Will these parts work on my truck if I add a switch for the clutch?
Dennis, as far as you know do I have everything that I need? I won't be ready to put the cruise in for maybe a month. When I get ready, I'll let you know. I'm probably going to need help with a tech article. I already talked to the wife and she will be standing by with the digital camera. In the meantime I will read some of the tech articles that are already here to get an idea of how it should be. Thanks a ton for the information you have given me so far.
Do you need part numbers, pictures, or a description? The best that I know to tell you for now is the black box that goes behind the dash has 2 plugs. 1 dark green and 1 grey. Both plugs have 6 wires each coming off of them. The black box has part #D7AF-9D844. There is also a little silver box attached to the black box that has 3 wires. There are 2 wires coming off the speedometer cable. Let me know exactly what you need to know. Thank you very much for all your help.
It was a little difficult to figure out some of it, but I finally got it working. It's the neatest thing since ice cream.
Are you considering adding cruise?
I looked at your gallery. That's a nice looking pick up that you have. What kind of seats are those?
Mike
Does anyone know where I can get a new 2-piece speedometer cable? These are incredibly hard to find. I have a 78 F150 with factory cruise, and the lower part of the cable has always had a tendancy to rest against the exhaust. I'd like to replace the whole thing since it is 26 years old.
