I'm debating putting the cold air induction in like Tim has. I do have question's however. I was looking through the owners manual (long night at work) and it warns you to be careful from getting rain or snow in the air intake. If I open it up even more how much of a concern will it be in terms of getting snow in there this winter when I'm busting through 3 - 4 foot drifts?
Also, how much better would the stock intake be with the cold air induction? I did a seach on this forum and didn't really see those answers.
Thanks!
Have you taken a close look at the intake on your truck? It already IS a "cold air" induction system. It sucks air right from the front of the grill. There is only a plastic guard in front of the opening to stop rain and "stuff" from getting in there. Save your money. There is no reason to change the stock system. It's about as straight and unrestricted as you can get. Banks doesnt even make an intake for this truck because the stock one works so well.
I have a foam "sock" I pull over the intake part that goes through the gril support, it is not in the photos, very simple thing. Keeps the big chunks out, and other things.
When clean out no rain no snow no BIG bugs like in Texas, I pull it off.
The last time I changed my air filter I was left with no doubt that my intake was unrestricted. Where I live it is common to hit birds flying out of the ditches next to the road. This lucky bird must have hit the grill just right. After I peeled it off the air filter I wished I had taken a picture first.
The foam is a good idea, I'll be installing it tomorrow.
what Tim has is an update of the ZooDad Mod...
named such because a user named ZooDad came up with it years ago...
but Tim has taken it a little further with "directing" it into his cleaner....
I've had the Zoodad on two excursions here in Texus (and where I've driven elsewhere) and NEVER had a problem with water/debris injestion.
I guess it COULD happen, but it never has to me...
Some other sites that actually came up with this idea now think it's the worst idea in the world...
but I can tell you from my butt-o-meter that it acts as a ram air once you get rolling...
have not measured the change, but know on the highway it is a different animal once 60 mph cool air is coming into the front of the beast !!!
In fact, I may be trying Tim's "tubing" to help ensure outside the engine compartment air is going in there rather than the hot engine air !
I have the ZooDad mod done as well. My setup looks identical to Tim's. I just took a dremel, cut a big hole, and smoothed it out with a sanding drum to make it look all pretty. Very easy mod, and only takes a few mins to complete. But that's another thread. If you search on here for it, there's plent of information regarding it. But I digress.
I added an airaid cold air box on my 03 F250 6.0 and the mechanic at the dealership told me the oil in the filter would make the mafs go crazy when the oil coated the heat wires in the sensor causing computer to get bad readings. I actually had lots better mileage (2mpg) with the cold air box but had soooo many problems with the '03 I took it off. the '03 is gone replaced with an '04 after 10 injectors, turbo, ipc sensor and fuel tank sensor and they never could get it to run right again (awesome when new--corvette's looked out!!!!) now the '04 is having stumbling problems at 7K miles. believe it to be 10-03 build date.
The oil in the filter will only drive the MAF crazy if you over oil it. Adhere to the directions on the box to maintain your filter correctly, and you will not have any problems. w00t!!

After reading about the Zoodad/Tim mod, I looked at Tim's gallery. Did that mod buy you much? Could you really tell a difference? Did you do the mod after the air raid box?
I looked at mine this morning and it looks kind of restrictive down there. How do you get those plastic snaps that hold the cover between the grill and radiator off without destroying them?
The ones holding the bottom of the radiator on is like a V shaped clip with the closed end toward the motor...
push a wide flat blade screwdriver under them and torque it a bot to close the V and pull a bit to release...
then do all 4 or 5 and the bottome should swing out....
