off the road

a easy question i supose. when you go driving offroad in 4x4 mode where do you switch the tranny in: overdrive, drive, 1 or 2?
there are not so much people in the netherlands with a BII (i believe we are one of the few, countable on 2 hands) so i wanted to ask you guys where you put it in and in what kind of offroad terrain you then drive.

thnx

I switch in neutral, but then I've got a manual.

As far as terrain, I drive mine in 4WD on snow (it'll plow though impossibly deep-looking snow with chains on all 4 wheels) and on rough dirt roads that encompass sand, rocks, steep gradients and water crossings.

I'm not into 4 wheeling as an end in itself, only as a means of getting somewhere further off the beaten track.

I've only had one real crunch. I was driving from Anza to Borrego Springs down Coyote Creek on a Christmas Day when it was snowing lightly in Anza. When I reached the lowest creek crossing there were half a dozen or so (larger) 4x4's parked on the opposite side of the creek. I wasn't about to do a 180 and drive back to Anza so I forded the stream. No problem there. The problem came when I tried to negotiate the bouldery road below the creek crossing. I guess water was still dripping from the undercarriage onto the wheels, as traction was poor. The rear end slid sideways and there was a wicked-sounding crunching noise. It turned out that the sheet metal below the passenger door got crunched. It sounded worse than it looks.

Tyres are BFGoodrich All Terrain Radials 235 70 R15. I've never had a puncture with these tyres (I'm on my second set), unlike other sets of tyres that suffered from side wall punctures.

In general, I use D when I'm in out crawling along dirt roads or the like in 4WD. I don't usually get going fast enough for 4th gear to be any advantage to me. In 4L on my '92, it can't really go fast enough for the computer to even "choose" to shift into 4th gear, so, in 4L anyway, D and OD are essentially the same.
Assuming the European model is the same as the US model, when in manual 2, the A4LD will be in 2nd gear no matter what. Good for engine braking, good for starting out on ice or other really slippery surface. Use manual 1 for real slow rock crawling and other times when I don't want to transmission to upshift.

Check above your drivers side sun-visor, it should give the recomended shift procedures for your particular rig. I've had 2 85's... one with auto lock hubs and an auto trans, one with manual hubs and a manual trans. I know the auto B2 was shift on the fly, the other I'm not sure about... but I always stopped and shifted it into 4wd long before I got into the bad stuff. Gear selection depends on the terrain and how fast you want to run. I would suggest a gear that kept your rpm's in a normal range considering how sensitive the 2.8L engine is to overheats and cracked heads, you sure don't want that mess. The B2's are great though, I used mine in the woods a lot, getting to hard to find hunting and fishing holes... going down ATV trails and sometimes making my own. I love the tight turning radius it had, made it very manuverable as opposed to some larger 4X4's.

the bII we have is a '85 american model, they never sold it over here. ik will take a look at the sun-visor. we are doing some repairs and after that we want to take it for some offraod driving. pretty sandy terrain. in the netherlands you don't have real offroad track. so it's a terrain especailly for offroad cars.

If you have auto hubs just make sure that your in at least 4x4 high when you get off the paved road,if you have manual hubs make sure that you lock them in .As for the auto trans I used Drive most of the time and I use 1or 2 in a real hard pull or going down a steep hill.I have found a lot of web sites on this subject.Good Luck,Have Fun, and most of all Be Safe!

P.S. Try not to go wheelin by yourself,best to have a buddy and his truck along.If you wheel long you will get stuck .Its nice to have a friend to help you out!{Dont went to walk out}
