I would like to replace the Continentals on my 03 4x4 Expy. My wife is finding it hard to understand/justify spending money on new tires for the truck. I drive quite a bit, and tow long distances. Of course, I am experiencing all the issues with the shake/etc on the Continentals. However, I am do not have the "tire knowledge" to help her understand the need to replace them, despite my knowing it is the necessary thing to do. Anyone who has thoughts on how to convey this to her is greatly appreciated.
If the tires are really that bad (and I guess many people have been unhappy with the Conti's), I would at least try to go back to Ford and complain. If you do it right, and can demonstrate specific problems, they might assist you. It is not unusual for Ford to make their suppliers correct defects.
Even if this doesn't work with Ford, specific weaknesses for your application may help justify the expense to your wife. I'm sure she wouldn't want you to have unsafe tires, but isn't ready to indulge any "boy racer" tendancies. You can't just say, "These tires suck!" You've got to say they shake, or slide in the rain, or whatever.
Boy, have I been the Ford route, not to mention Continental as well. They both of course claim the tires are perfectly suited to the vehicle. Good idea, and I should have mentioned that I had tried that.
I took my '04 XLT back to the dealer thinking my tires were out-of-balance or needed alignment... I had steering wheel shakes at 62mph and up. The dealer called me a few hours later saying they were replacing all four Cont tires for me... saying they were out of round quite a bit.
We just replaced our '03 EB with an '04 XLT Sport. On the '03 we had over 48,000 miles with about 30% tread left and all tires wearing true. We never experienced any vibration or any tire problems except for a road hazard blowout the last month we had it. So I have to say that while I initially felt somewhat cheated that Ford had gone with Contis instead of Michelins, I feel that the tires on our '03 did very well for us. No complaints, just praise.
Just dropped my Expy at the dealership for some warranty work. Noticed that there are several "indentions" in the tires on the sidewalls. They are at various places on the tires. I have never seen this before. Any ideas as to what it is or the implications?
Get rid of those Conti's! It is terrible that they put such junk on these trucks. The only thing worse is getting a set of General Grabbers......oh, wait, Continental makes them too.
After a week's worth of investigation as to why my expy would shake like a SOB at 65mph, my dealer finally decided to replace those Conti crap tire with Michelins, and what do ya know, it worked!
Every other day let all the air out of a different tire and then claim they are prone to pressure failure and you love her too much to risk this happening at high speed....After all it's a safety issue...And you couldn't imagine putting a price on her safety.....
