Red face what should I do ?

I have a 351m that is in need of a rebuild bad. Is it worth the extra money to change to a 400 crank. this is not going to be a racer just a 4x4 that gets to play sometime. just a work truck. also what is pocket porting and is the comp cam better than the edelbrock the other threads go both ways. i want something with good tork for pulling. i have a eledbrock carb and intake.this is in a 1979 f-250 4x4 with 4.11 gears and 32-10.5 tires

By all means go to a 400 crank and flattop pistons. The cost is minimal compared to the results. Do not use the Edelbrock Cam. A Comp Cams 255DEH for maximum low RPM torque or 265DEH for more pulling power on the highway. Pocket Porting means removing certain areas of the valve pockets in order to improve the air flow through the head. This will mean increased power from mid range RPM to the cam peak at above 5000 RPM. Porting is an option, but also worth the cost. Also it will not hurt drivability.

I would agree with danlee. The cost of a good junk yard 400 crank is well worth it. The 4.00" stroke will amaze you when the engine is in your truck. I'm not fond of edelbrock carbs and would never spend a penny on one. Yet my experience is based on the circle track world of racing, not on low end power trailer towing machines.

You don't need to get a 400 crankshaft from a junk yard. Replacement crank 'kits' can be purchased from many auto parts stores. The kit will consist of a crank and bearings to match. A kit for a 400 will not cost much more than a kit for a 351M. If they need a core, just bring back them your old crank, they will not care.

Just make sure that it is not ground way undersize. Any more than -0.020 on the mains and rod journals, I wouldn't accept.
