Engine just died
travelling down the mtorway (highway) doin about 70 then thud engine looses power and ignition lights come on.
engine spins but wont fire, checked for spark no spark.
took distributor cap off rotor arm not spinning
Any ideas?
I think the Timing chain has gone.
any help or advice, however small or large greatly apreciated as im inthe UK
looks like im spending my holiday rebuilding the motor
Does the engine sound normal when turning it over or does it spin faster than normal?
Usually if a timing chain jumps the engine will spin faster than normal when you turn it over.
There is a roll pin in the distributor gear than can shear off and cause the rotor not to turn too.
I had the same thing happen to me on mine not once but three times .Here it is> take out your distributor I'll bet money the gear at the end of the shaft is missing a few teeth(sheard off).make sure your timing marks are lined up when putting new one in .Or if you get one from the boneyard make sure the teeth are nice and flat the first couple i got were sharp and were worn so i got a couple of weeks out of each one then BANG same thing CHECK ENGINE light on car dead on hiwayPopped off dist cap guess what no rotor movement could"nt believe it but its fine now.Hope this helps some .P.S Hope this is your problem cause its alot easier a fix than the timing chain which could also be the problem, FINGERS CROSSED
Thats exactly what it was
unfortunatly didnt get your post in time but was so relieved when i figured it out. got as far as cam covers off. and when i turned the motor over and the valves moved I got suspicious so checked closer. im gonna do the timing chain anyway as Im almost there seems pointless to have 90% of the job done and not do it, at least ill have peace of mind.
having a job getting the bottom pulley off can undo centre bolt but not 4 small bolts that hold pulley to damper gonna buy a big puller tommorow and see if I can take the lot off in one go
Job done changed the timing chain anyway just in case and repaiired the leaking oil sump(rust). Getting the oil sump off was a nightmare had to jack up engine and trans to lower sump enough to get oil pump undone then it came off ok. on putting it back together I ground off some rough castings on the oil pump so I could get the sump back on but should have took off a bit more.
Onefut> Glad You got it all together, sounds like it was a real pain in the butt!I have to change out my oil pan soon, its starting to seep oil through it (about a Litre every couple weeks) but I've been putting it off I heard it was a job and a half to get that oil pan off gotta raise engine etc...anyways good job on yours hopefully it will be good to you for a while.. Cheers!

Live in Scotland and Aerostars in junkyards are few and far between and the was doing the job whilst visiting my inlaws so didnt have access to my tools or details of breakers etc as it was all at home
An Aerostar in Scotland, that's unique! I've never seen one while travelling through the UK and I guess there are less around there than here in Germany. Finding an Aerostar in a junkyard would be like birthday and christmas on one day.
