Smile Brake Warning Light

97 Power Stroke, 96,500 miles, the brake warning light is coming on now after start up and release of the emergency brake. Manual says it could be low fluid, low vacuum or emergency brake not returning to full off position. I purchased this vehicle new and have never had brakes done. Checked 2 of the possible problems, with the vacuum the only one I didn't know how to do. Is there any other possibilities? Does this light also indicate the need for new brakes? Thanks in advance.

not really, the brake light just says you are low on fluid. If you were low on fluid you might want to try bleeding the brakes, but you should find the leak. Test the vacume with a vacume gauge and you should have somewhere around 16" to 19".

My '96 just did the same thing. It turned out to be the vacumn pump. About $280 to fix at the local Ford place. The pump itself was around $150.

Post Was your ABS Light on too?

97 F-250 Diesel, both lights came on today first thing in the morning. Checked fuse, fluid, some connectors.

How do you dump the codes to see what the controller thinks?

The ABS light did not come on, it functioned normally. It was the defective vacuum pump that caused the problems for me. Good Luck.
