Where is the sensor that lights the Brake! warning light? I looked all over the parking brake pedal and master cylinder and there's no switch I can see. Where else would it be?
My light is on all the time. My parking brake is seized could that be the cause?
The pedal is all the way loose so there's no tension on it.
Sometimes the light will go out, but then come back on. No real rhyme or reason to when it does it.
Depends on the year. Up to mid 77 I think the nuetral/brake switch is on the bottom of the steering column. After that the nuetral switch is on the transmission. Not sure where the brake switch went.
Yes, the warning light sensor on my 78 F150 4wd (I'm pretty sure) is on the proportioning valve.
It's on the inside driver's side frame rail just in front of the firewall. Follow the front brake line. It should be less than 12" from where the rubber hose meets the metal line.
As stated above, There is NO sensor on your parking brake pedal. If your brake warning light is coming on YOU HAVE A FAILURE IN YOUR BRAKE SYSTEM. FIX IT!!! The warning light indicates a difference in pressure between the front and rear brake systems. Check your brake fluid level. If it's low/empty in 1 reservoir there's a leak somewhere. If you can't find a leak at any of the wheels or hoses then the master cylinder is probably bad and leaking fluid into the power booster. After you fix the problem and bleed the brake system you can reset the light by mashing the brake pedal to the floor.
You can check the bulb by cranking the engine. The bulb should come on when the ignition key is in the start position. Otherwise check that there is a 2 wire pulg on the proportioning valve. That is the harnes for the sensor swithch. I think you could crack open a brake bleeder and let some air in 1 side of the system. Mash down on the pedal and the light should come on and stay on. MAKE SURE YOU BLEED THE BRAKES AFTER THIS. Otherwise just check that everything is hooked up and trust it is working if the brakes are giving you no problems.
Crap, that's not what I wanted to hear. I hate brake work, I have excellent braking though, so the rears must be at least partially working. Think I'm going to save up and do the whole job all the way around, rotors, drums, pads, hardware, etc. and prob. new hoses. Now that I think about it the previous owner put on new hoses and I wonder if he didn't bleed properly, because back then none of the dash lights worked.
Well, now I know, (i'll check the prop valve first) but it'll probably need everthing! Thnks guys!
