My New '97 Expy
I am new to the board and I wanted to say what a pleasure it is reading this forum. Lots of great information and great people. Just a quick question: I just bought a 97 Expy XLT 4WD, rear heat & air, 3rd row seat, 4.6L with tow package and 75K on it. My wife and I both absolutely love this truck. I don't know the service history on this vehicle so I was wondering what you all would suggest to have serviced at this point. The used car dealer I bought from had it inspected and the oil changed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dean
I'd start with the following:
fuel filter
tranny oil and filter
front/rear differential and transfer case drain and refill
radiator flush and fill
check air filter
check brakes
These are fairly easy and routine maintenance items that won't set you back too much if you have the ability to do them yourself.
Good Luck.
Called my mechanic & he gave me prices for these services:
Fuel filter $40
tranny & torque conv oil, filter & gasket $130
Front/rear differential transfer case $200
Radiator flush & fill $50
Total $420 for parts & labor
Is it a ripoff??

Filter and Fluid for tranny is around $45
Fluids for differentials/transfer case ~$30
Two gallons of Preston $15.
All told, I come up with around $100 in parts/materials (Houston pricing).
Highway steering feel on this model is profoundly affected by tire pressure. I'm assuming that the vehicle certification label on the driver's door calls for 30 PSI front, 35 PSI rear. If you have a good air pressure guage, you should verify the correct pressure on cold tires.
Thank you all for your replies, it has been most helpful. Paul, you have a good point in checking the pressure of the spare. I do have the manual and all jacking equipment so I will be "industrious" this weekend and drop the spare. I am bringing it in for service tomorrow as I don't have the tools or the time to work on my own. I will also have the belts and hoses examined.

Just a quick follow-up, everything went fine and truck is running great. Mechanic showed me that the driver side lower ball joint had a tiny amount of play in it and recommended it to be changed. My question is, do you normally replace one ball joint or should both lowers be changed at the same time? The passenger side was OK.
Thanks.
