I replaced the DPFE, and that took care of my problem. I went to Autozone and they wanted $80 for it. Napa and O'reilly's didn't have it. so I called up my dealer. $30! since when is the dealer ever been the cheapest place to buy parts??

what year is your truck? shoot I'd be willing to go over there and pick up another DPFE and mail it to you to save ya $70. that's for the new DPFE, I don't know what they're asking for the old one. but it couldn't hurt to check if you like.
Guess I'll jump on here too!Bought an '02 F-150 SuperCrew(4.6L,4x4) about 2 months ago.26,900 miles. After about 1500 miles driven, the Service Engine Soon light came on.It's still under warranty so I took it to the dealer. They replaced the DPFE and after 75 miles,it came back on.The truck seems to be running rough.
I'm taking it back Thursday and asking(telling!)them to check the coils, the EGR ports and the throttle body for carbon build-up.I'll let you know. Thanks for the info.
On my Ford F150 I had the P0401 EGR Insuffienent Flow issue. Bought the DPFE for $50 at Autozone in Michigan. It has a 3 month warranty. Well, the code came back up after clearing it. I heard Ford redesigned the DPFE, so I wanted the modified Ford part. Yeah it looks a little different. It's now black plastic, but fits the same. Returned the Autozone part for a $50 refund, and kept the $90 Ford part. Well, it wasn't that, so I'm going to have to clean the ports in the EGR valve. There's a post that details how to do it here someplace. 98 F150 has 182,000 miles on it. It's the carbon, baby!!

If you find that post on cleaning the EGR ports please post the location here. I've read that the instructions are here somewhere, but I haven't found them, and I need to clean mine too.
It's under "Diagnostic code P0401 Insufficient EGR Flow" on this forum.
Incidentally, I think that excessive idling causes or at least accelerates this problem. Mine happened after I'd used my truck's inverter to provide AC power before my house had utility connections. Somebody else reported a similar cause.
i totally agree that excessive idling is part of the problem. i first got a code for this problem after having a water pump replaced. when i picked it up the mechanic said he had left it running for the last hour and there wasn't a drop of a leak. i drove home - less than half a mile away - and the check engine light came on. it was friday night, the repair shop was closed until monday, so i left a message that i'd drop it off monday morning. i went to pick it up monday night & the mechanic told me the code was for insufficient egr flow. i'd just paid him $300 for the water pump, and he said this would be another $300+. i told him i'd wait till it caused trouble. he wanted to charge me $50 for reading the code. i told him it happened 3 minutes after leaving his shop and i suspected that he had something to do with it. he totally denied it, and i had to file a claim with the credit card company to get my $50 back. after i left his shop i took it out on the xpressway & floored it a few times. the check engine light went out, and didn't come back on for 2 years, until my son took the vehicle, and would sit around with the engine idling, listening to the radio. someone here suggested finding a back road and driving it in first gear until it blew the carbon out. anybody tried that? any other alternatives to taking out a mess of parts to get to the egr?
I been having code 401 for several months and have replaced egr, dpfe, and solenoid cleaned the ports. This engine is a 4.2 with only 6,000 miles on it in a 97 E 250.I installed the engine myself after the other one throwed a rod through the oil pan.I guess im another victim of the dreaded head gaskets, anyway does anybody have any idea on fixing this problem? Could it be the pcm?

I would like to say that if the motor has high miles and u have the code P0401 EGR FLOW INSUFFICIENT, than I would clean the two EGR ports that are on the intake elbow on V8's before replacing any parts. As far as the V6's are concerned I am not sure.
