Angry Ford Taurus trannys.

Hi, i was wondering if someone could help me out, the person i work for has an older taurus, its a 1990, it has some transmission problems, so i tried a new filter and fluid, to no avail, still broke, it has 1st, Nutral and park, in drive or OD, it wont come out of first, dose any one know if this is a simple fix, or is this tranny spent? ita an AXOD METRIC, thats what it says on the pan, any help would be welcome. oh and i checked the fueses under tha dash thinking it was electronic and just poped a fuse, but nope, nothing. thanks folks!

Probably needs a new tranny.

Those years of Taurii are notorious for tranny problems. if you replace it replace it with an axod-e from a 93-95 taurus. I have had a few. Loved that AXOD-E. peeled it out every corner and no problems.

These guys seem to know their stuff on the Taurii. I picked up one a couple of months ago, and they have been a big help with it.

I had three, and the tranny went out in two of the three. Funny they were both 91s with the tranny problem. The one 90 I had just slipped. I bought one of the 91s from my grandma, and unfortunatly she forgot about a ford warrenty, and shelled out 2200 bucks for a new one.

Just for fun I went to www.tauruscarclub.com
Read the last question under FAQ>Maintenance- it deals with adjusting the throttle cable on an AXOD. Symptom is no upshifts or late hard shifts.

My info when I replaced the transmission in a '92 Taurus was that they came from the factory with a genetic defect that Ford would never own up to, but the replacement, especially rebuilt, trannies were OK.

The safest bet is to stay away from Tauruses and their derivitives, such as FWD vans, Sables, and FWD Mazdas (My stepson's Father-in-Law's '96 Mazda van tranny just bit the dust, just like my '92 Taurus and the stepson's dodge Caravan with the OD automatic).

Meanwhile, my '91 Ranger with 3.0/4AOD keeps going, and going, and going with 174,000 miles and counting

well i looked at the webpage, and cant seem to find what there talking about, plus the tranny isnt holding all the fluif ford says it should, its got 7 quarts, it supposed to hold 12.8, so i thyink theres something thats froze up inside. also for somereason the kid that was driving it said it happened on the way outa the woods, nothing was broken, he was driving down the road and it just went into a nutral position then threw itself into first, so i think its just dead, i cant see wasting money to fix it, a rebilt its 2,200, unfortunatly the cars not worth it, oh well , it will make a good donation car.

If you are 5 quarts low on fluid, it will certainly cause some strange shifting.....

I am confused as to how you would know it has 7 quarts in it though.... Or did you put in 7 when you changed the filter? Remember that it needs to be checked in park and warm....

That statement explains most of your problems. Never heard of any malfunction that actually moved the shifter between gears (except broken engine mount). Might we be talking about a little abuse?

it didnt actualy move, it just seemed like it, the shifter stayed in drive, but it went into a nutral like position, then he stopped and it was in first and wouldent come out, and yes i changed the fluid, thats how i know it only held 7 quarts.

The problem....

It sounds like a worn valve body in the tranny.

Would that be instant though?? and this isnt the only car, turuas actually that ive seen this happen to, theres about 4 at school, well where i used to go and they all did the same thing and all required a rebuilt tranny, but, i was just trying to figure it out to see if it was something i could fix so we could actually sell the car, and not just junk it, but like i said before, i think my boss is going to donate it, or something like that,
