Do the byson gaskets have self burning material to make them fit the ports perfectly? I have always wanted to try them but was afraid to go through all the trouble of getting a set and have them to work on my edel heads.
Edit: I just called that number and they gave me a number to a byson dealer in california. They said that the port size is 1.8" X 1.3". The bottom edge of the port is 1.1" from the bottom bolt hole. It appears that this gasket port matches about perfectly to the edel heads on paper anyways.. It is about .05" smaller than the port on all sides. The gasket costs $21.95 from this place:
They are a dark grey material(compressed fiber I was told, not paper white like mr. gasket). If you are running eldel heads you may need to hog them out a bit more then I did( you have the big ports). Self buring I don't think so, but when I started mine new engine up everything was curing , custom engine paint, por- 15 header paint, por -15 oil pan paint and manifold. That por 15 header paint is the best but lots of money, $15-20 a pint and that does not included the rust inhibitor. It took me about 2- 4 minutes with a dremel tool to hog them out a bit. And use the RVT for safe measure, I did just cause I hate replacing header and collector gaskets every other year. The last set held for about 5 years then I replaced the engine with the Jasper 320 h.p. 410 lbs. and Could not get the Byson until the following monday. I hate that, right in the middle of putting your engine in, you realize a part that you need can only be picked up on monday, so i tried Mr. Gasket one more time. Nope, did not work. Try calling Byson. Good luck
One thing I just did on a hunch is called a local machinist. He said that they have their own exhaust guy. I talked to him and for $15 he said he would mill my flanges down to make them straight again. I asked about milling the welds down until the flange is smooth and he said that wouldn't work very long because the flanges are thin and cheap and would warp. The byson would be my next choice for sure.
the fel-pro 1442's that i put on, have huge port opens, a lot bigger then the Mr.s Gasket set, the Mr. gasket set i put on are to small for my port opens, i did get the 1442's to seal, i just kept tightening till i couldnt tighten them anymore, but now u all know my motor is apart again awaiting a new intake gasket. so i dont kno how long the 1442's will last.
The cool thing about the mr gasket header gaskets is that they are self burining. Where ever the gasket hangs into the port gets ate away after a few miles. On a good set of headers (like mine used to be) they work every time.
Call a local machinist like I mentioned above. Maybe they deal with that stuff a lot and won't charge you much to have them surfaced. I bet they do a better job than the manufacturer did when they shipped them out.
i called arnold motors today and they said they would square up my headers for $20, i figured what the heck its half apart already anyway, they said they would have them done in the morning, so thats perfect timeing cuz thats when my intake is going back on.
Well I am working on my 3rd exaust leak with the 390 fe motor w/ headers. I have found that there are two types of gaskets for the 390 some have smaller port openings on them and the only ones I found like this were hooker header gaskets. these gaskets blew out too though. So I broke down and put the heads on a milling machine and cut about .030 off of the exaust ports to hopefully level them up. I also fixed a broken ear I had on them as well and re tapped all the holes and ground down the headers. After all this I am about to get it all put back together and let you know if that fixed the problem.
