I have had numerous problems with the glow plugs burning out. I've changed out the switch on the intake manifold twice. After changing it out the second time the glow plug liht will come on intermitting or stay on, most of the time I can catch them and shut down engine and restart, and all is fine, today I missed and the glow plug light was on and burned the glow plugs. Could there be something else wrong. I read about a relay that comes on after the egine starts for a few seconds, it that my problem. This is getting real expensive.... any help would be appreciated
I changed out the switch on the rear part of the engine as you have decribed, I may have repaired it, what I changed out was the "after glow plug relay" so for it has not intermitted a light. I have NOT installed new glow plugs until this relay can prove itself. Thanks for reply
I'm not sure I understand you correctly, you say you may have repaired it??
The only thing that controls the glow plugs is the control unit located at the rear of the left head. It may very well be bad, even if new. I would start with replacing the control unit again, should still be under warrently if recently replaced. Replace the bad glow plugs. And start from there.
This morning was nice and cool. I used the water jacket heaters to get me going this morning. The after glow realy was fucntioning properly his morning and this afternoon. Still a little "gun shy" about installing the new glow plugs until I absolutely know that the after glow relay was the culprit of my expensive ordeal.
What I really needed to know could a after after glow realy burn up glow plugs after start up?
I recently purchased an old 84 F250 with the 6.9L I found it hard to start - went and bought a set of glow plugs for it - installed them - started right up - the next morning nothing. Pulled them and found all were burnt out! Went to my local napa store and read the autolite book and found that the 1107 that it called for are 6V/50watt plugs, I have 12V going to my plugs (not sure if the previous owner changed something). The 1108 were for the 7.3L with pin connectors 10.5V/45watt, but the 1109 is 11.5V/60watt and has the spade connectors (except missing the tang). Put in a set of 1109 and working great so far, starts immediately everytime now.
I took the burned ones back to the chain store saying they sold me 6V plugs for my 12V system and they credited me back, I did state that I had 12V coming to the plugs at time of purchase.
reason for 6 volt gp is a quicker heat up and if ya got autolites in then get them out before they start to go bad too many have had probs with al they have a tendincy to swell and break off in the prechamber or can't get them out at all go with set of motorcrafts they have a better life
