More A/C Scotty !!!!!

My A/C is slowly failing. It works good while I'm standing at a light, but the minute I move it blows warmer and warmer air. When I reach cruise speed then the air is just cool, not as cold as it used to be. It seems as if a vacuum "something" is not working, but I assume most of the controls on a 2001 would be electric. Any Ideas before I hand my wallet over to a repair shop?
PS: I have access to a A/C R134 charging unit which I plan on checking the system pressures this weekend.

HMMM, I wonder if there is a vacuum leak going to the vacuum canister in the fenderwell?
I would check the charge first. It may be freezing up at the orfice tube when the compressor is spinning faster.

Well that's different. They usually don't blow as cold at idle due to the slower compressor RPM. Could be u have just enough freon in the system to keep the compressor engaged at low RPM and then the low pressure switch kicks the compressor off when the RPM comes up (and on, and off, and on, etc, etc). A check on the freon charge should indicate if you have freon problems and if not then look at the vacuum issues. I always thought on the older cars that the only things the vacuum controls are the position of the vent dampers. Either blowing air out the high vents for AC mode and lower vents for heat mode. So you would still get cold air out the vents but it would be at the floor level (not a real good place for cold air on a hot day).

Thanks for all the replies...I had the system checked by a friend, down to 12oz. Should be around 33oz. Junker2, you hit the nail right on the head. Dye was injected and the system recharged, all is working fine for now. We will check for leaks later this week. Thank God I didnt need a trip to the dealer cave.
