Any ideas of what could be wrong?
When I use my auto lock, door key or key pad, all the locks unlock except the drives door. I does not pop up and to open the door, I have to get in from the passenger side and open the drivers door with the handle.
Did it deteriorate over time (i.e. it got slugish?) or was it all of a sudden? It sounds like you either have had a failure in the solenoid itself (that pushes or pull the door lock) or in the wiring to it. It could be simply unplugged but that is not likely.
You dont say what year, but on a 97 the drivers door unlock relay is in the left rear near the rear washer pump. The relay might be bad or possibly a loose wire back there or an open between there & the door lock motor.

it is not likely the relay as the other doors are reported as unlocking fine

Yeah, i know what you are saying , and on the older Explorers that would be true, but the wiring diagram for the 97 shows that the drivers door has it's own seperate unlock relay. This is activated by a sigle press of the remote to unlock the drivers door only. Press the remote twice & all doors are unlocked by a second relay. And all doors are locked by a 3rd relay. Isnt technology grand.

OOPS, sorry, I just had a chance to take a closer look at this electronic door lock nonsense and I see that there are two systems. On trucks that are equipped with the "electronic group" option, the drivers door can be unlocked by itself. On trucks without this option all doors are unlocked together.
A follow on question to this might be if the power door lock on the driver's door locks properly. If it does lock correctly it might help to narrow down the possibilities of what is wrong.
