4x4 help

I have a '97 4x4 and the front end will not engage. I can hear something clicking/clunking as I turn the automatic dash switch back and forth, but the front end will not engage. Has anyone ran into this before? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Does it light up in the dash when you turn it on?

Yes, the 4x4 indicators (low and high) work fine. It appears to be an intermittent problem because it worked fine yesterday. From what I have read on this forum it may be a vacuum issue (leak)? I am open for any ideas. Thanks.

I had the same problem on my 98 4x4 XLT, the pins that engage the unit were packed with mud. The dealership cleaned the mud and packed it with grease and I never had the problem again
