I amgetting ready to get a 2000 F-350 Crew Cab 4x4 with the PSD. I am uncertain about which transmission to get. I have always had Manual but I was really looking forward to getting an automatic. I have heard that the automatic transmission in this truck may not be ideal. Please let me know the history of the problems with the F-250 transmission and if I am likely to have problems with the transmission. Is this the same auto that has been in the f-350 for sometime or have they corrected the weaknesses?
Hey, if you are bent on getting a Ford, DEFINITELY get a manual transmission!! The automatice is junk. (I've heard the new ones are better, but I wouldn't take the chance.) I have a '97 F350 that I bought new - first tranny went out at about 18,000 miles - before I had ever even towed anything w/it. At 48,000 miles, they put the 5th one in!!! The most frustrating thing is that Ford Motor Co. just blows me off instead of trying to get to the bottom of the problem & getting it fixed once & for all. I will trade it in for a Dodge or Chevy in the near future.
electronic controls, long warrenty, can shift better than you, with cruise control you can not come close in MPG, what more do you want. Manual shift?, you lose...Richard

Doesn't this qualify as a Lemon? Did you pursue getting a new truck? Maybe the ''5th'' tranny is a typo? None of this sounds like the norm to me.
I don't know if it's normal or not. I'm a mechanic at a Navistar Dealership and work on all kinds of commercial vehicels. recently I've been working on a 98 E350 Ambulance with a powerstroke , it's had the auto tranny out 6 times in the last year. I'm really hoping I can fix it this time.
Like you said, you've had it out 6 times...that doesn't mean you've replaced it 6 times. Sure a tranny can give problems, and if it isn't fixed properly, it will continue to give problems. Maybe if it was done right, it wouldn't be coming out for the 6th time. Good Luck
