I had a friend inform me that the 99 and on PSD's cannot use off road diesel fuel. I have been told forever that there is absolutly no difference between the two. (less the red die) Could someone tell me a definate yes or no on this subject. Thanks
Except for the legality of it there shouldn't be a problem. The legal end of things being that "off-road" fuel you normally don't pay road taxes on. Otherwise, it might also be a little dirtier so you'll want to keep an eye on filters and water seperators.
i know fuel is way to dambed high but i don't know why you'd want to burn the off road diesel in that quality of an engine. i burn cenex roadmaster in mine and i haven't come across a better fuel. my engine runs smoother a quieter using that fuel. it'll run about a nickel higher than straight #2.
The main advantage with using off highway diesel is the high sulfer content. There is more lubrication in the fuel which is better for injectors, pumps and orings, or unit injectors (as in the Power Stroke). Yes, running this fuel is technically illegal, but unless you have diesel emissions testing, you would probably never get caught. Over the road trucks fall under different circumstances because of the taxes they pay in the price of the normal fuel. They are watched much more closely than the private owner.
i'm not being sarcastic but, i'm sure ford as well as the big trucks built the injector pumps for the new low sulfur diesel. i'm not arguing that off road diesel has more lubricating properties than the low sulfur. i will "walk in your shoes" and try some off road diesel and compare them myself.
well I do not know about where you live, but here in the sacramento area, the IRS is alive and well checking tanks on anything diesel from class 8 trucks down to VW rabbits. $10,000 fine if they find the dye in the tank.
I can't afford to use offroad red just because of the IRS etc. But I have a 1986 and it does really great on the "new" fuels as long as I add approximately 8 ozs per tankful of auto tranny fluid. I use Dexron III in the transmission so I run the cheapest dexron III I can find as a fuel additive. It adds lubricity, cuts down the diesel knock. I have had guys telling me that I have a gas engine because it is too quiet for a diesel. I also get approximately 22 MPG when using it and less than 21 without, I believe that the high detergent qualities along with the added lubricity of the ATF fluid really help the fuel system. An old diesel mech tols me about this. He also said that whenever I change my final stage fuel filter I need to fill the filter with 1/2 diesel and 1/2 ATF and it will immediately clean the injectors. No damage. Just something I learned.
IRS? as in the internal revenue service. if so what authority do they have with roads and fuel? wouldn't the DOT have that authority? IRS i don't get the IRS thing.
