Water Separator

I just purchased a 2000 Ford F250 PSD 4x4 Lariat. I read in the Service guide that you need to drain the water separator once a month. Today I tried to find the valve that opens the water holding compartment? I could not find where you open the valve. Can someone tell me how often I should do this and where is the best place to access this valve - under the vehicle or under the hood.

Thanks for any help

Water Separator

Before you do anything else get under your PSD and locate a tube that is coming down on the riders side of the engine towards the front. This is the drain tube for the separator. I would attach a piece of tubing and put the tube in a clear empty litre bottle. If you look at the top of the engine there is a black cover with the logo on it and two bolts. To the drivers side and down behind that cover is a plastic lever that is yellow in color. With the engine off push that lever to open. Have somebody turn the ignition key on but don't start the engine, just engage the fuel pump. Watch the flow into the litre bottle and when it turns totally to diesel turn the ignition off. Push the yellow lever back to its original position, remove the tube and bottle and you are done. You don't have to use the tube but you will have a mess on the side of your PSD engine and on the ground. You might figure out how to leave the tube connected, but I haven't been able to find a way that makes me feel comfortable that the tube won't get melted or tangled up in something.

Good Luck
