I have had my 99 Super Duty PSD for 2 weeks now, and love everything about the truck. Just a few peculiarities that I am not sure if it is normal or not. If I stomp on it from a stop, It feels weak up to 2250 rpm where there is a very noticeable turbo surge. Seems like a lot of turbo lag to me. Is this when the turbo normally kicks in? the truck is bone stock. Also while towing an 8100# trailer this memorial day I only averaged 11 mpg, combined flat freeway and mountains. I get anywhere from 16-21 unloaded depending on my driving, but that sounds normal. thanks for any input.
I've had my truck for 2 years now and since, i've steadily been modifying it from stock, but i don't remember it being too bad on take off. I do remember however test driving some used trucks 01's and 02's and i recalled some of them pretty sluggish on the low end, but at the time I was not accustomed to driving a diesel. To make a long story short, they are extremely sluggish on take off compared to a gasser. You will get used to it. My turbo usually starts kicking hard around 1800 on an asserted take off. Of course thats in second gear cause it does'nt stay in first very long, or atleast not long enough to guage the turbo's performance. Your truck is probably behaving normally and will take some getting used to. I would consider getting some guages, Exhaust, Boost and maybe tranny. They will tell you a pretty good bit as to how your truck is behaving at any given time and they will also provide you with a baseline on performance to compare with so you can tell if you start having any issues
hey guys, i also just test drove my 99 f250 psd w/6spd and it will be ready for pick up at the end of the week. while i was driving it, i noticed that it was much slower than the 02 auto i have driven in the past. i also feel as if the turbo, although a significant boost, kicks in too late.
Guess it is probably normal then. The very first thing i will do is guages. Compared to my 96 351 Bronco it feels like a dead snail. Towing any substantial weight however is another story altogether.
FordNut,
Once you get the gauges then I'd either get your truck chipped or buy a reprogrammer. I've installed a set of gauges and bought a reprogammer. I can't say this truck drives like my 1/2 ton gasser but it's close. My fuel mileage is 14.5 average and 11.5 towing my 10,000 lb tractor and trailer across Oklahoma. Paul
Thanks longhorn, i was curious about towing mileage as well since i was just getting 11 towing 8,000 lb trailer full of wood and quads. A foreman is great for skidding logs to the road for firewood. My biggest dilemma right now of course is dinero. I am trying to complete an EFI 393 stroker for my 82 capri project in time to catch some of the summer. Now that should make up for any lack of acceleration in the SD.

The autos are faster than the 6 speeds, they don't lose as much boost between shifts like the manuals do.
you are right that autos are faster, but what i am saying is that when it is in gear, and you step on the gas, the turbo kicks in later than in the 02 auto
The 2003 E-350 cutaway ambulance I drove last year had quite a lag on it also. There was no Tacho so I could not tell what RPM it was turning but quite a bit of accelerator was needed to get it moving. Much more than the backup 1993 model and the 1994 model the new 2003 ambulance replaced.
Granted this 2003 was the last of the 7.3's to be installed in ambulances, and it's the first this service owned with a PSD.
Since we are on the subject I've noticed the same thing but thoght that it was turbo lag. I did have another issue though and this was with it being cold. It seems like when I step on the gas you can hear a break in the exhaust. It's almost like it's hesitating, but you don't feel any significant power loss. Once the truck is nicely warmed up it pretty much stops. I'm very new to diesel (two weeks now) and my bumper to bumper warrenty experies in about 5 months. Can someone tell me if this is normal or should I have it checked out? Thanks in advance! By the way it's a 2001 auto with 4x4.
could be the Exhaust backpressure control valve opening and closing. Ebpv is used when cold to help warm up the engine, it engages and disengages based on temp of oil/air and or throttle position. Its quite possible that it is engaged at idle when cold and then when it disengages on acceleration is when you notice the sound. It actually should gain power when disengaging. If this is the culprit, you can disengage it by unplugging the sensor underneath the turbo pedastal....

The 02 has more horsepower and more agressive base programming.
I dont know what it is but I think the early 99's are the fastest and most responsive. My truck is an early 99 and its the most powerful stock diesel I've ever driven. A buddy of mine also has an early 99 and his is the same way and he smokes 38 inch swampers just by mashing it and his is stock as well.
