I don't know anything about a Maverick but if the Mossberg or Winchester suited me I wouldn't even consider it. You can't go wrong with either one. Unless you are going to use it for ducks, in my opinion, a 26" barrel my work better for general hunting. It's a little quicker to get on target.

i have heard some stuff about the safety on the mossbergs, i've heard that dirt gets in there and the safety can fail, im not sure if this is true or not, but i shoot a browning bps and it has the prong safety and it has never failed. i am a huge browning fan, and those guns are'nt cheap as 183 dollars but they are good guns and they hold value, just my 4 cents

For the money, a Remington 870 Express is one great gun! Can't get much better than that!

I know that Winchester is probably the best, or one of the best, shotguns on the market. But, is the Mossberg a good gun? I might wind up getting the Winchester, but the Moss costs a lot less. Any advice anyone?
Dude I've got two old Winchester Model 12 pump shotguns that have never let me down. One's the "riot control" model (either 16" or 18" barrel) with folding stock and pistol grips (very mean looking) and the other a standard long-barrel. My regular long-barrel appraised last year at $750, I would have the other one done but it NEVER leaves the house. There fairly heavy and aren't made anymore but in all the year's I've had mine they've never jammed or needed any work done on them. One of these in good condition should run somewhere between $500-$1300.

I've had my Mossberg 500 for 20 years and it's still one of my favorite guns to shoot. You can't go wrong with the Mossberg and you can spend the money you save on shells.

I'm wanting a short barreled 12 guage pump to keep in my motorhome while travelling. Like a police riot gun. I don't see so well in pitch black dead of night, anymore, and might not hit anything with my 9, but with a 12 guage , and double ought buck, and a short barrel, it should even up the odds a little.

You might want to take a look at a Winchester Mod. 1300 Defender. It has a 18" barrel and holds 8 rounds. I keep one in the house and one in the toy hauler. I used to keep them loaded with OOBuck but have switched to #4shot followed by #4buck. At the range I would use it the pattern will be quite small so it's not going to matter and there is less likely the heavier pellets will penetrate a wall hurt a neighbor. I'm more interested in deterring than killing. I keep one in the chamber for a quick shot or a warning "sound effects rack" and there are still plenty rounds left if that doesn't work. There will be some who disagree with my selections but that's the way it works for me. JMO..I hope your eyesite is good enough to identify your target.

A good old $100 pawn shop double barrel sawed off (to the legal limits of course) makes for a mean home defense gun also.

Thanks, Jerry, I will take a look at it. And yes, you are right. The sound is unmistakable when jacking a round into the chamber, and a GREAT deterrent in its own right.

Good thought Johnboy, but haven't seen any that cheap. I like double barrels, too. They too can do the job in the middle of the night. Pretty frightening in daylight, too.
I'll check a couple of local pawn shops and see what they have.

if your going with home defense a 1300 defender, works well with a top-folding stock/pistol grip and forend pistol grip. A Norinco Model 98 can be used for home defense and can be obtained for around $200, Remington 870P/870 Riot also will work well but will cost more.

Thanks for that, Tennessee. Yep, home defense is what I'm looking for. Did you see the picture a little while back of the longer range home defense weapon? A guy had a bolt action .50 caliber rifle, that he claimed was accurate at 1000 yards. I guess if you could see'em you could drop 'em......

I have been heavily into firearms for many years and I've owned the Mossbergs, Remingtons, and Winchesters. Each has been fantastic, I really don't have complaints for any of them. Just find one of the Big 3 that you like the feel and look of, don't be afraid of spending a few extra dollars for the one you really want. Chances are you will own that gun for the rest of your life, so a couple of bucks is worth the investment.

I think the .50 you're thinking of was an Armalite AR-50. I've got one of these and it is a fun gun. It is true that .50 rifles are accurate out to, and beyond, 1000 yards. There is an organization called the Fifty Caliber Shooters Association (fcsa.org) that actually have mile shoots(1760 yards). At this range there are shooters with custom rifles able to consistently hit a pie pan. Check out Barrettrifles.com for some nice toys.
