I followed everyone's advice on my starting problem on my 89 f250 I6.Replaced relays, fusible links, etc. Finally got it to crank from the key,but still no start.I am still not getting codes through scanners or engine light flashes. Finally decided to pull ecm. This thing smells roasted. It has that burnt wire smell that i got when this whole problem started. The oem number on the computer ends with a Z2B.The aftermarket stores i contacted list a ZB but no Z2B.Is this the same number? I have heard from a few people that these ecm's don't often take a dump like this but what else could it be?Does the ecm control the cranking of the system or does it just take over for fuel delivery and when the truck is running? Thanks.

The ecm does not control cranking. It's definitely doing things during cranking, but does not actually have any real part in it. The cranking(starting) system is basically the same as the ones in the late 50's when they changed to a 12 volt system.
The ecm is the heart of the system as far as the engine running. There are some important signals that come from the module on the dist, but these are used by the ecm to control the fuel pump, the injectors, etc.
The ecm can certainly go bad, but it is rare. Sounds like you may have one burnt up, especially since it won't talk to you through the code reader or the light. I would double check all your wiring laying on top of the engine, and running down the firewall beside the exhaust, to make sure you don't have any problems, and then get another one. Hopefully the new one will talk to you when you hook it up, and it will verify through the code pulses, how many cylinders the engine should have that it is hooked to.
One more thing, obviously i need to make sure the battery is unhooked before changing ecm.Any tips or tricks i need to know? There seemed to be some dielectric grease on the pins when i removed the old unit.Do i need to apply anything like this for the new one? Thanks for the help.
