Here we go again. My 82' Bronco tailgate window stopped working last year around this same time. Luckily it was down when it went out. I was able to fix it, after pulling everything apart. It was just a bad connection. Well......here we go again, it stopped working. The problem however is that the window is up. How can I get the window down so I can open the tailgate? I have the rear access panel off, but don't see anyway to release the window.
The only way i can think of getting that tailgate down is taking the hardtop off very carfully so you don't break the window then its just a matter of pulling on the handle and letting it drop down. i had the same problem with my 79 bronco the wires where so worn that the copper inside just broke.
I thought about that. I looked in the chiltons and it said there is some type of bar to depress in the lower center of the tail gate. If there is one, I can't find it.
The only thing holding the window in that position is the motor. Remove the motor with a piece of wood supporting the window wiper arm...and when you take the motor gear away from the wiper arm the window should be really easy to push down.
After I had rewired practically the whole damn thing and still getting intermittent window failures, it turned out to be the plastic connector just below the big ugly gear in the center of the window. All I had to do was push the thing back together. Could be the same for you. You can access this by taking out the metal panel. The window must be up for you to work on the wiring inside the tailgate anyway. Also, if you can get the panel off you may be able to remove the sliders and lower the window. BTW, the plastic sliders are the same as the ones on the front windows.
Thanks much ! I'm going to go give it a try. Last year that same plug was the problem. If thats not it, then I'll try to remove that motor. It's a tight fit trying to get back there and work on it from the inside. Thanks again...............

While the motor is out, you might as well check it with the window still up... That way, if the problem is the motor itself, you dont' have to pull the glass down, open the tailgate, put the glass up, fix the motor, then put it in. Just take the motor out, fix it, put it back in. My $0.02
If the question is about the bar that Chiltons refers to, it is vertical to the window. And it is in the center of the tailgate It is more a rod than a bar with a hook bend at the bottom. When the window goes down, it catches the hook, pulls the whole "lever/bar" down, trips a switch, and lets the tailgate latch release so that you can open the tail gate. It's possible to run a jumper wire to the motor to get the window down if the wiring is bad but if the motors bad then I don't know how to get the window down. Maybe reach up inside to the brackets and undo the bolts holding the glass to the regulator assembly but I think you'd be working rather blind so that may be a little (alot) difficult.

It will open as long as the window is not in the tracks on the fiberglass top. I've done it too many times while trying to fix the window. If the window is extended, however, it will flop around when you lower the gate. After I fixed that stupid plug that I described above ( I wired it together with galvanized wire so the window going down would stop yanking it out) It has worked flawlessly for 2 years. Believe me, when you work sometimes in the worst part of Jersey City, that is importantant!
