Just Blew My Engine

I have a 94 Aerostar and coming from Baltimore this morning on 95, a hose blew, dumping my coolant. My engine overheated (unbeknownst to me) lots of pinging from the engine, loss of power and then a stall as I'm pulling off 95 to the shoulder. I get AAA to tow me to Tysons Ford in Northern VA and they replace the blown hos and tell me that the head gasket is blown and the definately do not recommend a replacement at the age and mileage of the van (abt 150k). I have been sinking cash into the car for about 2 mos. Fist my torque converter went ($400) then my plugs and wires ($400), then a fuel injector ($400), a tie rod end needs replacing (another $200?), alignment and 2 new tires on the front ($250?). Is it worth fixing or replacing the engine??? I imagine labor is crazy on engine replacement but it'll be about $1200-$1500 for the head gasket replacement...

Advice appreciated...

I would, but then I rebuilt my own engines. I did it to Two 89 Aerostars around $750.00 Each.
Here is how I did it.

I would to and as far as your tie hod is concerned if it's an outer tie rod and you have a fairly good tool set you should be able to do that yourself pretty easily. The tie rods I've done on some gm's were only 19.00 for the part or so. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do.

My problem is, that mechanically, I'm a moron. So I have to farm the work out. And my playschool tool set likely won't do the job anyway!
Thanks.

Are you from the Balto aera? I maybe able to help you out with it. I just did a 92 that blew a hose and blew the gasket, basicly same as you. I took a few hours to do, I think I had approx $250. in parts, did the valve job myself and the thing ran like new. It had 158k on it, so I would say it's worth it unless you want a new car payment instead.

I actually blew it up south of Baltimore in Elkridge, MD along 95. Had it towed to Tysons Corner, VA and then came to get it Monday and towed it to southern VA, south of Charlottesville. It's about a 4hr drive to Baltimore for me.
