There are a couple of things that you can do, first a couple of questions, does it smoke at all when taking off? and what color is the smoke? Have you changed the fuel filters lately?

Depending on your answers, is the answer to what you can do, advise.

Dave there is a very light wisp of smoke but only after it is wound up and ready to shift the fuel filter is about 2 months old (about 4,000 miles) but it was like this from the time I bought it almost 2 years ago nothing seems to make a difference. I put a k&n air filter in it and took the muffler off and replaced it with a straight thru glass pack and it uped the mileage and gave it a little more get up but not much.

The most important thing that affects performance on 6.9/7.3 is the injector pump. Chances are that if it has never been changed it is in need. You can turn the fuel up slightly or advance the timing 2 degrees. This may give you the power you are looking for. I have a 87 with a 6.9 and even before I installed the turbo it had real good get up.

If you need info on how to turn the injector pump, there are several tech articles or you can search for it.

Dave,
I have really good mileage with this truck according to all the posts I have read, if I turn the pump up isn't it going to smoke and lose mileage? it has 149,000 on it and I don't know if it was changed but it had 110,000 when I got it and ran the same way. My mileage is 19 mpg and it doesn't matter how I drive or how much weight i am hauling. John (fatforty)

Like anything in cars, you have to sacrafice something to get something, you can't have it both ways, if you want more power you will loose fuel economy. Even with a turbo, you will loose a little mileage. Seems you truck is set up for mileage and not power. You can turn the pump up slightly and not get the smoke. The light color smoke you are seeing is due to a lien condition. This being ok if you are looking for fuel mileage and not power. My truck with a turbo will just about keep up with any PSD off the line, but my fuel mileage does suffer from it. 12MPG.

The other option again, is to have the timing tested (dynamic and
not static) this will ensure your proper timing, but I believe that it is close or ok.

ave, I will try turning up the pump this weekend and let you know how it goes it just hurts my pride a little to see all those little cars and all the other trucks drive away from a light, and I'm still trying to get moving. One thing I noticed about the truck is it seems to be faster if I step down on the throttle but not all the way to the floor it seems to take off faster if I'm about 3/4 of the way in the throttle.

My truck does the light color smoke as well. It is getting around 17-18 Miles per gallon and runs pretty strong throughout. It pulls like a bear but is a little gutlees on the get go. I am thinking a turbo will solve this but I am going to England and by the time I get back here the pwoer strokes will be over 10 years old and then I will buy about a 95-96 truck and start all over again. lol. I like my 6.9 really well and will probably keep it as well though. You can never have too much blue oval around the house take it easy.

I would love to go to a Turbo. I am going to England for 4 years in the spring. I am going to save my pennies while there and finish my truck when I get back. I will probably go with the ATS turbo or I might even do a Powerstroke and 5 speed swap. Sounds wierd but I love the looks of the 80-86 trucks for some reason. They just look mean. How about it folks, does a powerstroke in an 86 CC sound cool? ah well, just daydreaming.
