ok what does a Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP Sensor) actually do? Why the heck is it so important to cost so much? and what would cause one to go bad?

The new one I installed today eliminated my truck from freakin' stalling on me. Get this...the stealership wanted $130 to replace it. One 10mm deep socket and 15 minutes of wrestling it was done. for do-it-yourselvers, to the stealerships. As for other "technical explanation" I'm sure a gearhead will chime in on this.

Basically, I think it "sees" or "counts" the revolutions of the cam shaft, then sends a signal back to the main computer which tells it that it's OK to send more fuel. If the sensor goes bad, there is no such signal, so the computer shuts off the fuel supply and the truck stops.........

RedTaurus94 is on the money. The cam position sensor keeps tabs on exactly where in the four stroke revolution pattern the engine and valve train is so the engine control module can "tell" the injectors exactly when to fire. It is one of many inputs to the engine computer that affects how the truck runs. Without a signal from the CPS the computer does not know when to fire the injectors so it does not fire them at all.

well is it my CMP sensor going out.....

i can start my truck up and drive for awhile and out of no where the truck starts kicking, and occasionally dies, but if i put it in neutral and kill it then start it back up every thing goes back to normal. Can the CMP sensor mess up for a couple of seconds or does it just go out and the truck doesnt run?

Cam position sensors can go either way - intermittent problems that get progressively worse (even for a period of weeks) until total failure or go out completely without any warning whatsoever.

Does this become more of a problem when it is raining. That seems to be the only time my 2000 F350 will stall

Intermittent

On my 99 the problem was intermittent stalling. Usually at idle and not while driving under power. It became gradually worse. Finally got around to changing it out last Friday and no problems since.

p.s. a very easy installation.

You can do it with the belt on but it's a little easier with it off. Easier to get to from underneath.
