I`m in the process of buying a 2000 limited with a v-10, dealer has it till tuesday so they can replace ball joints & tires. Are they ball joints a common problem, the thing only has 49k on it? My 01 f-250 has 56k on it and the front end is tight as could be. Just wondering?
On my 2000 ( with 44k miles on it ) the dealer just did them under warranty. I did not even notice a problem, they found it while doing an inspection. Good thing the warranty covered it, $670 for 3 out of 4 ball joints !
Thanks for the replies guy`s, mine are both 4x4, i was wondering because the dealer told me they change ball joints in just about everyone that comes in. I asked if it was somthing that was always bad or are they just replacing. He said he even gets taurus`s back with 25k that need them. But superduty`s are the worst with them.
My wifes 00 4x4 diesel X with 116K seems to have perfect ball joints. The truck was bought at 104K so they must have been replaced by the original owner.
My 99 4x4 diesel F250 wore it's original ball joints until 150,000 miles!!! The truck would shake really bad ocasionally though.
The diesel trucks really eat up ball joints fast. Heard Dodge Cummins owners with the same problem.
The problem with the OEM ball joints is that they can not be lubricated. My left ball joints (upper and lower) were bad at my last inspection (65,000 miles). I had my mechanic replace all four of them with greasable joints.
At 150K miles the only bad original ball joint was the driver side lower. My friend and I figured we might as well replace all four with Precision brand greasable version. Ford also sell greasable ones.
