Ok,I just got this truck a few months back.Haven't had a chance to take it off road thank goodness.Well tonight I wanted to fool around and test the transfer case(BW in a early 87 F150) to see if it was making any strange noises in reverse. With my hubs not locked in(FREE) I stuck it into 4H and put the tranny in reverse.Heard a loud CRACK and the truck jumped.I put it back into 2W.Well,while I was leaving the parking lot(was at walfart BTW) I heard a very faint thump thump thump from under the truck.Got home and had my cousin look under while I drove by in 2W and he said the front drive shaft was turning. So I tested it again in 4H and N.Didn't make any noise this time.Tried 4L but it wouldn't go.Felt like it would bottom out and you could hear gears barely touching(very slight grinding noise like a tranny without syncronizers).Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong other than bent linkage(I hope thats what it is)?
Could be many things, try locking the hubs in and locking it into 4hi, the tacse could have been partailly locked into 4hi and when you put it in reverse it became fully locked and made the bang.
You will hear the grinding shifting from Hi to Low if you take a break in Nuetral. If you shift straight in and don't stop in Nuetral you shouldn't hear the grinding as long as the trans is in Park or Nuetral and the truck is stopped.
