I just had a diagnostic check done on my '91 2.3L 4cyl. Ranger, and it showed I need an engine coolant temperature sensor. The guy at the parts store said there are two types: one for a digital readout and one for a standard guage. Is this correct?
Tell the guy you want the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, which has TWO wires coming off of it. This is a critical engine control sensor. There is no such thing as "digital or standard" for this sensor.
You DON"T want the Engine Temperature Sending Switch, which has only ONE wire coming off of it. The Temp Sending Switch is for your instrument gauge reading only. The unit itself looks similar to an ECT. I believe the parts guy may be thinking of this one.
