Ok here is my two cents. Everyone is going to think i'm nuts, but if you touch any sort of mud go with the BFG M/T. I know, I know, mud tires are loud give a rough ride and so on, but these dont. I drive every day on the highway and these tires are just barely louder than a/t. They also wear very slowly. Off road they will do circles around the a/t. I've been off road before and my friend with a/t was spinning all four tires, while my M/T never sliped once in 2wd.

Just put on a set of Bridgestone Duelers and love them. I went with the H/L version instead of the A/T Revos (there are different versions of Dueler A/Ts) and I am not disappointed in the least. Like you I do nothing off road, so my need to an A/T tire is limited to about some snow (about 30" per year) and maybe cutting across someone's backyard from time to time. I have spent some time in a Exp. with the A/Ts and could tell some difference, but I would not let the noise thing bother me, it was not that much louder. The real difference is the ride. The A/T's are much stiffer in the sidewall than the H/L's. I get a reasonably smooth quite ride from a tire that actually looks like it belongs on the vehicle. Either tire will be a good choice. I just went with the H/L's after honestly addressing my type of driving.

While I did not buy my tires from the Tire Rack, you can get way more information than you need at these sights... (Be sure to read the testimonials for individual tires, you can search by vehicle and see what others are saying.)

For my 2 cents, after doing a lot of research, I opted to go with Michelin LTX MS and couldn't be happier for my 98xlt. I had a miserable experience (lousy ride and never balanced right) with the Goodyear Wrangler HTs that Ford put on to replace the Firestone Wilderness AT's.

Ford gave me Goodyear Wrangler RT/S's--much quieter than the Firestones, no issues with them. I have 10 year old Dueler HT's on my E150, they are quiet and wear ok.

Hey, here's a high dollar option: Go buy a set of 17 or 18 inch wheels, put some 55's on them and use them in town. Get a set of "Mud Grips" for your stock wheels and howl on down the road to the hunting & off road places. A good floor jack with a beefy piece of 2x12 will lift one side of car at a time if placed right between the doors. That and an air gun and you will be just like the Woods Brothers in no time.

I'd also put my money on the Michelin LTX M/S. I just bought a '99 with LTX A/Ts and they are noisier and rougher riding than the M/S's I had on my '95. Unfortunately, the A/Ts only have a few thousand miles on them so I'm stuck with them for awhile . My experience with Michelins indicate that they'll easily go 60,000 miles or more before they need to be replaced.

Defiantly the Duelers. Either the regular A/T for light offroading or the Revo A/T if you are going to be doing moderate offroading. Hands down the best A/T tire I have ever run. These out perform my old Firehawks, Timberlines, LTX and BFGs in every category. I will never buy any other A/T than the Duelers from now on.

Smile 2 cents that last a long time...

I put a set of Michelin LTX M/S's on my '97 XLT after a bad alignments exposed the belts in the shoulder of the Firestone Wilderness AT's. Have had them on 4 years now, about 60K miles and still going strong. Probably will get another 20K or more miles. I've never had the truck slip in rain, snow, or mud- but I've never been in mud that a stock '97 XLT has no business being in. As long as you're not blazing a new trail through the woods definitely go with the LTX M/S's, great ride and no noise on the highway too.

Go with the Dueler A/T, I've had them on my '98 for 60,000+ miles and they're great. Not really loud, great in snow and pretty good in mud, all at a lot less that the Michelin and BFG.
