Combustion chamber volume

Maybe I am missing something obvious, but why are combustion chamber volumes reported as a range? For instance Steve Christ reports the D2 heads as having a 68.1-71.1 cc chamber. Is this just the amount of variation among different castings?

Yep, to hard to control any tighter without adding cost. You'll find that most heads will cc out on the higher side.

The part that threw me off is that Steve Christ even reports about 3 cc of variation even with machined heads? I would have figured machined heads would be real consistent. I guess machined chambers only remove the hot spots not the variation in volume.
