Power Stroke MPG?
I am very glad I finally found a message board like this. Please help me... What is the MPG of the new Ford Power Stroke Desel? I was planning to buy a new F250 4x4 crew cab desel, but today I talked with someone who said they were only getting 13mpg... I think I can squeeze that out of the V10... Can any of you tell me what MPG people are really getting out of this new engine?
Thank you very much for your time.
Mark
My husband and I have a 99 F-250 4x4 Crew cab (automatic). We are currently getting 17 mpg freeway and when we pull our fifth wheel trailer full of cattle we are getting about 11.5 mpg. I guess you could also say our truck is really broke in- we have 22,000 miles on it and its not even a yr old. Aside from the not so great gas mileage we really like the truck and i wouldnt trade a thing *except the color*
I just got a 2000 PSD 250 4x4 last Thursday. Had to go from Milwaukee WI to Traverse City MI by way of the upper UP. Had nasty weather 25 to 50 miler per hour winds and had to use 4x4 at times because of road conditions. I averaged about 19 to 22 MPG. This was on a truck that had onlt 120 miles on it. I love it I traded in an 1997 150 with 92,000 miles on it and what a difference. Like Mikey says Try it you will like it.
the new 1997 F-350 crewcab seems to get about 16 so far, has never been re-programmed as far as I can tell.
I get 14 to 15 driving to and from work in moderate traffic...not really what I would consider stop and go.
On the interstate running between 73 and 85 without the cruise set and the A/C on about 50% of the time, I get about 16 mpg.
Not great but then it is a big truck.
A 3.73 rear end may be a better choice for fuel mileage, but I was told by my dealer that limited slip is not availabe. Ford towing specs are the same for both gear sets.
It believe the 2 wheelers with 3.73 are the ones getting 17 MPG

K&N makes a concail type filter (your biggest restriction you've got due to ford is running the same air box as a gas block) Cut the muffler off and run a straight pipe.

Also I should tell you my friend has a F-350 4x4 V10 and is getting 10 around the city. He wished he had paid the extra and bought the PS.
My 2000 PSD with 4.10 gears w/ auto gets 14 highway, and 10 to 12 city. I dont have a computer, so I do the math at every fill up.
(28,000 miles) 97, F250, heavy duty ,crewcab,shortbed,4x4 with a 7.3
turbo Diesel,And I Love it.I just checked my milage and Im happy to say that im getting 18 mpg around town.I would think that maybe on the highway ill, be getting maybe 20 to perhaps 25 mpg.Now I have a 355 rear end and that probably helps. On making the choice on a diesel or v10 theres no question what i would do (DIESEL EVERY TIME)Why for one the power, gas milage, towing, and the fact, when its very hot out just let it run with the air is on while your in the restaurant.Go for buy the best A DIESEL
The first 1000 miles = 10 mpg tops! It
steadily improved with accumulated miles.
at 14,500 miles now, it gives 13 at 80, 14 at 75, 15 at 70, and about 15.5 at 65 with cruise on. Replace the air filter every other oil change, even if you never get off road. Change oil and filter every 3500 to 4500 miles. DO NOT run motorcraft 5w30 automotive oil (put in mine by mistake once - it dropped to 9 mpg and wouldn't run but about 75 tops, just not enough oil to power the pump)
I run Rotella-t 15W40. If you think your powerstroke is junk, go trade it for a GMC or a DODGE. My 1996 GMC diesel 2WD 5 speed regular cab never gives over 12 mpg. At 102,000 miles, the block cracked and had to be replaced. Just out of warranty! My 1999 Dodge has always given 18 to 20 MPG on a 5 speed quad cab 4X4, but the antilock brakes are DANGEROUS! They unlock and seem to never re-engage. The door hinges are starting to sag already. The throwout bearing is rough and noisy again (twice in 60,000 miles) The only thing it has going for it is the Cummins motor and Michelin tires from the factory. Long after the truck is junked, that motor will probably be running an irrigation pump somewhere!
Several tuners I have talked to say ANY chip will usually help mileage due to eliminating VSS de-tuning Ford does so the truck does not abruptly fall on its face at 98 MPH when it reaches the Federally mandated 98 MPH governed limit on trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles. It seems that the de-tuning starts at as low as 65 or 70 MPH, and many speed limits are 70 to 75, putting the engine in a de-tuned, inefficient state.
