checking stroke

I want to check my stroke to see if I have a 360 or 390, I have read some threads that say to check #1 and #4 cyl and then substract and the difference will be the stroke. Is this correct, also, are the odd number cylinders on the right bank and the evens on the left on FE motors? thanks for any help.

the cylibders are numbersed , front to back then left to right.

left side front to back , 1 2 3 4

right side 5, 6, 7, 8

the techinque you mentioned will work. or just measure the top and bottom of any single cylinder. the difference is the stroke.

~3.5" = 360
~3.75"= 390

nope no chevy numbers here. 1 to 4 on right bank 5 to 8 on left. Just check stroke with any piston from bdc to tdc. No substracting anything.

All depends if your sitting in the seat or looking at the motor from the front, so you are both right

left (passenger) side front to back , 1 2 3 4

right (driver) side 5, 6, 7, 8

You can also measure the #1 and #4 without turning the motor over and the difference between the marks is your stroke.
