2003 F250 SCab FX4 5.4L Auto, oem exhaust system; need to replace damaged muffler with no other changes. Likely put in Flowmaster 70 but have to get it sent UPS/mail. Need to get an online order placed tonight and no way to get to truck to look [it's buried in the "road" 10 miles from here].
Here's the Question:
Do I need 3" In & Out with Center Inlet and Offset Outlet??
I have a 2003 5.4L but it's huh...an FX2 regular cab. I measured the pipes with a caliper and both the input and output are 3". The muffler is mounted vertically and has an offset input (from the engine) on the bottom and an offset output (to rear of truck) to the top of the muffler. (So viewing it from the passenger side rear to front, it does a figure "Z") The input pipe has about a 1' pipe with a clamp were it meets the pipe from the cat. That 1' input pipe is welded to the muffler so that's looks easy to take off but the rear output pipe that goes over the axle and to the side is welded on the muffler. There's a hanger on the 1' input pipe and a hanger on the output pipe. (Also welded.)
ps. My truck wasn't burried 10 miles down the road. Hopefully, you have a Hi-Lift jack and a shovel.
Just what I needed -- wanted to make sure I ordered right muffler!
I think I will have my work cut out for me, as GF said it was "up to running board" on driver side and "over it" on the other. Soft spot in road underneath gravel surface, likely thawed spot in permafrost or similar. Last Spring I had great fun pulling 3 Bow Ties and a Tundra out of a muddy hole like that about a mile further this way -- guess it's my turn now... Maybe I won't be so cocky (or so obnoxious to our Less Fortunate friends who don't have SDs) next time. Naaaah.
There's a F550 wrecker next door and guy offered to go out and give it a try (for free -- ain't small towns nice).
Well, it's my excuse to upgrade the muffler and GF can hardly complain. After all, it's just a replacement.
Good news, by the way -- snaked the truck right out, nary a problem even with lots of muddy clay suction. Did lose a fog light and big tear in the muffler [sharp rock took a chunk of it off and the piece was lying by the road next to the hole -- props to GF for figuring out what it was from! Ordered a FM70 and turned down generous offer from GF to pay for it ... Ordered some Bilstein HDs while I was at it [might have damaged those oem FX4 Ranchettes, you know].
Decided I would keep both the truck and GF as they are fairly low maintenance, run well, and still nice sheet metal (all the bugs are either worked out or worked around). New ones are hard to come by and $$$$, lots of used ["pre-owned"] ones around but good used one is a rare find.
