We were doing some mud bogging the other night, when a loud shearing noise came from my front end. At the time I didn't know what the problem was but I knew my four wheel drive had ceased to work.
Anyway, I got home pulled my front differential cover off and a pile of metal parts came out with all the oil. The truck is a 77 F150 with an unknown lift kit and it has 39.5 boggers. The lift must be 6 or 8 inches. The 39.5's don't have a clearance issue. The front is a Dana 44 and the back is a 10 inch Sterling rear. I was wondering are 39.5's too big for a Dana 44 and should I go to a Dana 60. If so what do cost? Dana 60's are probably not something you see in junkyards very often.
Jones's swamp has claimed another front end. If anyone ever is in the Pensacola area, visit the swamp. Thanks
BTW, 39s are way to big for a Dana 44, not to mention they are boggers. I think you can swap in a Dana HP60 from a 78-79 F-250. Not sure how though, I'm an 80-86 guy..
bremen is right....unless it is a mall crawler the D44 does not like the 44's pounding on them esp in the mud. A D60 is the prime choice but you won't find one for less than about $700 unless you really come upon a deal. I bought mine completely assembled for $1000. it came from a DRW 88 F350 so it has the inner shafts that neck up.
to get the D60 in your truck no matter where you get it from you will have to choose either coils or leafs cause you truck has coils and any D60 you find will have leafs. it's just a matter of fabbing the right mounts!
and BTW...I am running 39.5 IROK's on a 6" lift with no clearance issues so it may not be a lift as tall as you think.
Thanks for the inputs, I think I'm going to call dynatrac and get a Dana 60. I suppose it was only a matter of time before I messed something up. I have a tendancy to be very hard on vehicles.
I've never seen a 78/79 F-250 with an HP Dana 60? Don't think that a factory job exists. You may be confusing it with the similar Dana 44. Reason that I know is because I purchased a 78 F-250 thinking that it had a Dana 60.
The F-250s with Dana60s are the ones that have the "snowfighter" package. People tell me you can find a lot (like every other one you see) in the snow states, but it is hard to find them in the midwest. Of course, you can get one from an F-350 ('79 I think) if you can find one of those.
I live in the deep south and it hasn't snowed down here in ten years. I going to dig around in the local junkyards first, you never know what I might turn up.
Yeah I would check the junkyards out first who knows what you can find. If you can't find anything and have the money I would definitely give dynatrac a call. That prorock 60 looks awfully cool!
