I think baumann engineering's site has the low down. Basically each is a redesign with other redesigns along the way. AOD is a non-electronically controlled four speed auto. The AOD-E is the electronically controlled version. The 4R70W is the redesign of the AOD-E. What's new with each? Someone else will have to tell you. If you have a 4R70W, it should work as long as the programming is set right for your truck.

I think the 'W' stands for wide ratio, so it would have a lower first and second gear.

Yes it does So Cal. Some of the AOD-E's had wide ratio sets as well. That was one of the truck mods, but I'm pretty sure they put the AOD-EW's in Crown Vic's and other heavy bodied cars.
