ect sensor

I just had a diagnostic check done on my '91 2.3L 4cyl. Ranger, and it showed I need an engine coolant temperature sensor. The guy at the parts store said there are two types: one for a digital readout and one for a standard guage. Is this correct?

Also, where is the ECT sensor located?

The ECT sensor should be on the drivers side of the engine near the firewall directly under the intake manifold. Can be seen quite clearly from under the truck.

I would also suggest posting this thread in the Ranger forum as user Rockledge has pictures of the various components that he will post.

The parts guy is talking about the temp gauge sending unit which is a single wire. What you need is the sensor that tells the computer how warm your engine is. It's a 2 wire sensor.
