I am planning a trip down to Baja the trip will include pulling a 16,000 lb boat and trailer. I have a 1991 F250 4x4 7.3l w
ATS turbo, auto trans e40d with overdrive, 410 gears. What should I check as for any problems we might encounter with the e40d.

You need to check the color of the fluid, make sure it is red. I would recommend putting a tranny cooler on it if there isn't one already. Also add two bottles of "LUBE GARD" transmission fluid protectant, or one bottle of lucas transmission fix. I prefer the lube gard. It seems to stop all slipping and shuttering. It uses a paraffin base to keep the valves from sticking and is recommended from most of the tranny shops. Good luck on the trip!

Thnks for the info. Will check it out. Also do you know anything about power chips and what effect they would have?

You have a 1991 with a 7.3 IDI. Correct? The IDI after the 7.3 stands for "In-Direct Injection." All mechanical. The 7.3 "Powerstroke" was only offered after 1994.5 and was completly electronic. There is no chip to upgrade because there is no computer on the IDI's. But if you have a ATS turbo you were supposed to have got a new transmission chip. You can upgrade the transmission chip for different shift patterns.

If you want more power out of the IDI's you need to get a bigger exhaust, a K&N air filter, and turn the fuel up slightly. And possibly put some higher pressure injectors in. But watch out that you don't turn the fuel up too much. Contact ATS and ask them if it is adviseable to modify or adjust the wastgate acutator to allow more air at low speeds.

If you ever get a new powerstroke and want a powerchip, watch out! You need to wait for the engine to break-in fully. And do some checking around for what chips damage the engine. To much fuel will cause valve failure, blown head gasket, melted piston heads, etc.... And remember, all a power chip does, is modify the fuel delivery and timing settings, all which you can do manually with the IDI's.

Also, I forgot to metion, try using a powerstroke 2 quart oil filter on your truck. The standard one is a 1qt, I found out that the 2qt filter fits right on and gives you extra oil and extra filtration. I've had great luck using them.
