Quick Question
Hey yall, I have a 78 F-150 4x4 w/a 4speed and the married transfer case. I was wondering what fluid I need for the transmission? Does it take something like ATF or what? And also what gear oil do I need for the 9 inch and D44? Thanks!

You can use straight 90wt, 85/90wt, or 85/145 in the axles. Part time gear-driven transfer cases (NP205, Dana 20) take gear oil too as do most truck manual 4 speeds. In the Haynes, manual, Ford specifies 90wt for axles and 140wt for trans and t-case. If you have an NP203 full time t-case, it uses either atf or 10-40 oil. Don't remember which as it's been years since I had a full time 4wd truck.

If the tranny is a T18, the original specs call for SAE 50W oil. It is hard to find, but I found valvoline synthetic at my auto parts store. Interestingly, the same stuff was used in the 205. This is what my factory shop manual calls for. Ted
