ranger ignition ping
my son has a '95 ranger 2.3 4 cyl. It has ignition ping pretty steadily when driving it and even has it when using premium fuel. On my old '89, i was told (by a dealership) to pull an electrical plug out of it's connector and this would retard the timing slightly. I found this plug on the firewall of his '95 and removed it yesterday. truck runs great and does not ping anymore. Does anyone know what this does really? Can i leave it out? it is a plastic 2 prong plug that is located on the firewall and completes some kind of connection to the ignition system. Thanks for the help, Kent

I think you are right! so is there any other way to combat there very bad pinging? it has 90,000 miles on it. I have owned two rangers now with the 2.3 engine and they both have pinging terribly. any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Kent

Several things come to mind. Do you have the proper spark plugs installed? Make sure you are using quality plugs, not the 99 cents plugs. Also make sure the wires are good. Another possibility is a vacuum leak. Check the engine with a guage. They are pretty cheap and worth the money. You could possibly have some emission problems, but usually a CEL will show up for those. Check the first two before you start throwing money and time at it and keep us posted.
