Guess the Firestone's aren't so bad.Got the optional white letter AT's on mine, even at the speed limiter they're smooth as glass.Had a leak on one of them,Firestone dealer could not find it,then it went away.Local Firestone dealer is great, got a service plan on mine, lots cheaper than routine stuff at the Ford dealer, and a heck of a lot faster to boot.No trouble from two sets on my previous F-150,so guess I'll stay with a winner. At least my tires don't break down
Mine has Generals. I changed the rims to Forged Centerlines before 50 miles. 2600 miles with no problems at any speeds.(they have the "ripples" too which I have had on many brands)
There is a slight ripple on all tires where the belts are joined.
Where the problem is is that a certain percentage of all tires are out of round. This is revealed when it takes more than an ounce or two to balance the tire. The bad out of round tires ride like a log wagon. They are also obvious on a spin balancer. This is why I always watch them balance my tires. Any tire that takes a bunch of weight, I reject.
the machine that will tell you if a tire is bad is called a road force machine it can tell if the rim is good and if the tire is good it is usually a heavy spot on the tire that makes unable to balance, most dealerships have the road force machine and can adjust the tire for you instead of going to tire store, good luck.
With all the bad pupblicity Ford has with tires, now the new F150's come with Korein, (sorry if its spelled wronge)Tires. The curtesy driver told me that the poor customers have to drive to Lakeland Florida if they have any promblems with them. For me that would be 75 miles. Not gooood not gooood!
I have had 2 PSD and replace the generals before 10K on both. The dealer ran me around in circles with excuses and after side wall blowouts on both trucks I changed to Dunlops. I stll have a few generals in the back yard if anyone wants them.
Try a set on Michelins. You'll never go back to anything else.
I have a 2003 F350 duallie. Front end was out and cupped the tires real bad. Ford paid for an outside shop to realign it and for two new tires. Still have the generals on the rear with 32000 on them. Will install michelins there as soon as these are worn out. Love Michelins and thats all I have on 5 other trucks but I'm not made of money so I wear out the stock ones first.
When I first got my DRW, it came with general tires, and I would feel a vibration driving about 30 - 40MPH. I had the tires rotated around 8,000 miles, and I am now at almost 34,000 miles, and have not had a vibration yet to speek of.
After how many miles "generaly speaking" should you replace the tires ??
I can imagine the cost of replacing all six tires. (ouch)
Just shy of 1,000.00 for all 6 Michelins. I go by the remaining tread depth for replacement in Spring and Summer. If it's marginal and were getting into the fall I just bite the bullet and replace them all. Better for safety in the winter.
Well, I visited my dealer right after the last blowout at 9900 miles, and he replaced all the tires with Michelins. He really shocked the dickens out of me. I was prepared to pay the upgrade price to the Michelins, and for about 25% of the wear on the existing Generals. Here's hoping the problem has been solved, and I want to thank Jack Kain Ford in Versailles, KY for working with me on this.
jjlex,
That is a very impressive move by your dealer! I can think of one Ford dealer in the Dallas metroplex that could use a dose the "good customer service attitude" that was shown you by Jack Kain Ford!!
John Russell
ps. now if Jack Kain is your father, uncle, brother or something else, then all bets are off ;-)
Just got off the phone with my service writer with a General tire problem. I have one tire that has a flat spot. 1 inch wide band across the width of the tire tread that is 1/16th inch shorter that the rest of the tire diameter.
The SW told me to bring it so he could get the #'s from it and order my replacement tire. Said it takes about 3 weeks. General has stopped making this tire but Ford currently has a stock pile. I told him it might be time to look @ total replacement which, of course, he said they could do without problems with the other tires. We shall see about that tomorrow.
2003 crew cab dually. Just replaced 2 front tires at 10k miles(Generals). Took truck in to balance/align and they could not get the tires to balance so checked rims which were ok. The cords in the tires were shifting which they could see on the balancer as the tire squirmed as it ran up. Bottom line lousy tires, am getting ready for a cross country pull and the front just did not feel right, glad I checked.
