This is for the guys with surging idle... I've had the same problem and i've read the posts on it and about all the EGR and stuff like that... But what I found is when i was re - doing my exhaust i took off the piping till the Cat. and i left it off for a few days while working on the rest of the pipe and noticed that my RPMs would bounce and I guess its due to no back pressure. So I put the exhaust back together and fixed that problem. well anyway ever since i put the exhaust back together I've had leaks and just recently I started getting BAD surges and i did the best i could checking the EGR and stuff like that abut took a look under the truck and noticed the return line from the cat broke free and had a hole where the tube should be attached... well i fixed it with JB weld lastnight but broke free again today, so I got a metal strap and pulled the tube backl to its spot put more JB weld on it and then put some Muffler Meld on and so I hope it will hold. But besides the long story(sorry) the moral would be that exhaust leaks are another thing to look at when you have an Idle surge.
I had really fubar'd smog and EGR leaks and my car wouldn't surge, just idle high all the time. Now with all that BS gone and even with open headers now (temporary of course), it idles great.
as far as i know my EGR and smog stuff checks out except maybe for the O2 sensor, but i cleaned that and they're really not supposed to go bad.... but I just checked wires and such and disconnected the EGR sensor plug and noticed corrosion on two of the female ends of the wires... took electrical cleaner to them. but we'll see what happens tomorrow
my friends tell me that O2s are not suppose to go bad they just need to be cleaned... and if anyone knows where I can get a winch mount bumper for a 90 Bronco that isn't pre-runner or tubular let me know... I've got a 12,000lb Electric MileMarker that needs a bumper.
Well I was on my way for a long trip and it still does the surging Idle and now its worse.... It will actually die now so I just replaced the fuel filter and now i think i hear a miss in the engine so I'm gona replace spark plugs... probably about time to do that too. and again hope that it fixes it... Those of you with a 351 Windsor will a fauled spark plug make the engine die?
Have you checked for codes? If you haven't, you need to. Clean the IAC w/carb cleaner and check your TPS voltage. If it runs good on the throttle, but bad at idle those are the first two things to start acting up. Also, check your vacuum with a guage. Those are the first things I do when my Bronco starts bucking.
well I just replaced my spark plugs and it seems a lot better nowkinda still does the surging idle but not as bad at all. and i have checked codes but forgot them one was an open cirguit to the fuel pump and another was a low voltage on the EGR I believe. I'll run em again though... its been a while, But ya those spark plugs were GONE!

No. It just idles real ruf. Kinda like if one plug wire is off. runiing on 7 cylinders
I'm not saying it's the cure but O2 sensors do for sure go bad. I had a bad one on a different vehicle and it caused what the book called "severe idle search". They're not all that expensive. You need a special socket to r&r, most good parts stores have it.
Ok, here's what i think it is, for that i had the same prob a whle back(4 years ago)
U have two temp sensors, one for your guage, and the other for your computer. If the one for your comp goes bad, then it send a message to the comp saying the motor is at max temp, when it's not. the comp then trys to lean out the motor to bring the temp down, but then fights the 02 sensor, cause a surge. The worse the temp sensor, the worse the surge. It's located on the tube that runs to your heater core, under the upper intake.
New user...nice to meet everyone...same problem in my '88 302 EFI, sometimes it only felt like a stiff gust of wind pushing directly against the front of my truck on the highways. It also left me with a check engine light. Regardless, the TPS (throttle position sensor) underneath of the intake manifold was replaced and it cleared both the problem and the check engine light.
