Idle and ecceleration problems.

Idle and ecceleration problems.
i have an 89 f150 with a straight six.
the problem i am having is that when i first start the truck it idles really high until i hit the throttle and it idles normal. after the truck is warmed up and i start it again the idle is fine.
the second problem is when i hit the gas (from an idle) it cuts out and wants to die and then catches. If i baby it a little it will eccelerate with no problem.
except for those two hiccups the truck runs like a champ. there is a seperation in the exhaust where the pipes from the manifold join as one. I know that is partly why it doesn't eccelerate properly. I was told that the egr valve could be causing my problems. could that be it and if so where do i find it? how do i take it apart?
