What is the best way to see if a tie rod has outlived itself. when ever i get out of 3rd into 4th my front tires start to wobble so bad i have to pull over and completely stop than go again. i shook the tires up and down, left and right, and everything is tight. but the ends of the tie rod looks all worn. its a '89 F350 7.3L the other tie rods are replaced but this one is original. any help would be appreciated. thanks
Have the balance checked on the tires. I had a set one time that were so out of balance that I couldn't keep it on the road much less get over 30mph. I had the steering linkage checked and everything was fine. It was the tires out of balance. I didn't think tire balancing could get that bad but it did!
Yeah i work in the auto center at a sears, and thats what the first thing i checked was. they are 35x12.50x16.5 and they are balance to within .25oz so i dont believe that the balance is the problem. like i said the one tie rod that goes across the whole front is the only thing that is still stock. there looks like there is some play in the ends, so i am assuming thats what it is, but more suggestions will help. thanks
Replaced and vibration gone!!!! but align is so far out, all i can do is laugh. now just to find an alignment machine for 35x12.5x16.5! thanks for all the help. where are you guys all from? just to put name and place together, im from upstate NY
I am having a difficult time finding someone to align it. if i put stock size tires on it just for the alignment and then put the 35's on after, will that affect the align. basically is it worth it? thanks
If you can't find anyone to align it with the large tires, put the stock size on it then get it aligned. Since all they set on 4x4s is the toe-in,it would still be very close to being correct.
