I have a 98 Eddie Bauer Expy and it's A/C has started to cut out whenever I hit highway speeds. No cold air at all. When I turned off the Interstate and stopped at a red light, the A/C started blowing cold again. Right up until I hit 70+ mph.
I just purchased it a month ago and have never had it on the highway until then. Any ideas??
I know that on some vehicles (not sure about Expy) that the AC compressor will dis-engage if the engine revs go above a certain RPM (say 3500). I believe there is a clutch that controls this action and it could be faulty, (if the expy does the same thing) disengaging at a lower RPM than it should.
Just another thing to consider, although I would look at refrigerant level first.
I think it is a freon charge problem also. At highway speeds, with the compressor at a higher RPM, the pressure on the suction side is going too low, and the low pressure cutout switch is opening. One other thing to remember, there is a WOT compressor cutout relay also, that the PCM controls, from the TPS.
Ok.....now it has cut out completely and there is a rattling noise (like chains across concrete) whenever I have the HVAC controls in ANY setting other than Panel/Floor; that goes for in motion or at a stop
Low pressure is my guess. At highway speed the ram air through the condensor is cooling with greater efficency and causeing the pressure to drop. There is a pressure switch on the reciever dryer that can normally be jumped with a paperclip to troubleshoot this. Try half a can and see what you get.
Sorry didn't see your second post, never mind my last. Only guess there is low charge may have burned up compressor bearings. If you have a leak in the system the oil that lubes the compressor can leak as well.
