I have a professionally rebuilt 400 with only 250 miles on it and I'm having oil pressure problems. At start up the engine has 75 psi., but once the engine is warm, and you stop at a stop sign, it drops to 0 psi. The manual gauge has been replaced, as well as a local shop put they're own guage on it and it reads the same. Also a new oil pump has been installed with no change. Any ideas at all would be greatly appreciated.
What weight oil are you using? Is the engine getting hot? Have you changed the oil/filter? A new tight engine can ruin the oil in a hurry if it gets too warm.
I am running 10W30 oil, it and filter were changed at approximately 200 miles. The engine runs at about 160 degrees. A local shop replaced the oil pump, and checked a couple of the bearings and said they were fine. They wanted to pull the engine and check the cam bearings. I have since taken the truck back to the machine shop where the machine work was done TMeyer Inc. He said it should not be the cam bearings because a 400 doesn't oil that way. He said the local shop was treating my engine like a Chevy. Thanks for your help guys.
Its a good idea to always check the left side lifter bores for wear in any 400 thats going to be rebuilt. The oil system depends on them being tight to hold oil pressure.
"He said it should not be the cam bearings because a 400 doesn't oil that way. He said the local shop was treating my engine like a Chevy."
Then he doesn't know what he's talking about. Ford engines oil the cam first, so worn cam bearings are the first place to lose pressure, and they will lose a lot of it. Chevies oil the cam last. Cam bearing clearance should have been checked and the cam bearings replaced if needed. Sounds like TMeyer, Inc. is trying to wiggle out of the situation.
If it were me I would change the oil and filter using a 20w50. It would tell you if the filter had a problem and you could judge the effect of a thicker oil. I like to change the oil and filter at breakin, 200 miles, 1000 miles etc. If it doesn't help it might tell you something. There could be a lot of left over junk floating around in the oil.
