As mentioned before, I just bought a new F250 diesel with automatic. After reading all the horror stories about the automatic, I wish I had gotten the manual trani. Too late!
What preventative maintenance would you guys suggest?
Synthetic trani fluid? What kind?
Change more frequently?
Thanks.
I want to tell you my story which I am not sure whether is the norm or unsual! I have an early 99, delivered in may of 98. This is a short bed 4x2 F-250 Super cab. Ford recomends that tranny fluid be changed every 30,000 miles. I changed mine at 55,000 and honestly the smell and color you could not tall it from the new fluid! I never use this truck, it sits in the garage untl we go rving we then hook up our 30 foot 5th wheel travel trailer which loaded weighs between 11,000 to 12,000 lbs this unit ha been towed back and forth cross country coast to coast across the Rockies and desert, so it has seen the extremes. This tranny still works perfectly. My truck has the stock tranny cooler on it and thats the only fluid change it has had. I am not recomending waiting that long to change the fluid, in fact I am going to change mine at recomended intervals in the future.

I use fully synthetic fluid and change at the recommended interval (30,000) I also have an extra cooler, and the B&M finned aluminum oil pan. this adds 3 qts to the total capacity (and $15.00 to a change). I have had two powerstrokes, and a couple of other E4OD's and never had a failure. I shut off the O.D. when in 40 mph traffic when it is "hunting" to keep it out of overdrive, and let it shift at 50 when I am sure that there is little stop-and-go traffic left. I also do not shift out of O.D. into drive until I have decelerated down to 50. the owners manual confirms this practice, and it has worked well for me. I typically drive 70-80,000 miles a year towing heavy trailer loads (bundles of lumber, bobcat ect)and have had no problems yet with E4ODs.
